Showing pigs is very common at state/county fairs. All livestock including pigs are kept in pens like this on farms and then at the fair grounds during the fair.
To show a pig, you, your pig and other people and their pigs are all coralled into a large arena area and you thawp your pig with a stick like a riding crop to get the pig to move around while the judges look at the livestock. You are judged both on how well you handle the animal/general presentation but also on how the pig looks. Big but porportional is good. Anyway, the audience is mostly people who will buy your hog for slaughter. One can make pretty good money for a pig. $300-$500 usually.
I got stuck on "you thwap your pig with a stick" for a while, because that... I dunno. If you're completely urbanised, that's just ludicrously funny.
But once I'm over the image, that's rather interesting. It's like sheepdog contests! Without the sheepdog dying at the end; it seems a bit bittersweet for the pig.
