So, you remember when I told [livejournal.com profile] snaxcident about webinars and she told her boss and all hell broke loose?

We were talking about it the other day while she cursed the name of Webinar, and I said, "I have to ask, though, are the webinars at all productive? Are they bringing in new clients or at least new contacts?"

She made many frowny faces at me but said, "Unfortunately for me they have an incredible ROI - they are generating lots of leads, especially in the states. We hired an event manager to manage our webinars because they became so popular."

This means I literally talked a job into existence. I have created employment for someone! Let's hold onto that magic.

Let's have a SAM'S CAFE JOB FAIR.

The job fair is simple!

Leave a comment about where you are and what you do and what kind of work you're looking for (use your own good common sense about how much personal info to share). If you're looking to hire, know someone who is, or have resources to share, feel free to post those too!

I'll kick it off: I don't have many general jobsearch bookmarks anymore, but if you're looking for Not For Profit Jobs, there's a place to start.

Have at it!

ETA: Comments have been locked due to spammerz. Sorry guys!

A college friend of mine founded a textbook digitization company, Uniqu (http://theuniqu.com/default.aspx), using the Connexions (http://cnx.org) framework (Rhaptos engine) and has gotten more contracts than he has the employees to handle time-effectively. He hired me as a contractor to copyedit content for OCR and formatting errors. He needs people to do anything from XML editing to design processing for textbooks.

Most of the work can be done from anywhere. The possible catch is that a Texas address might be required to work for the company (I'm not entirely clear on how negotiable this is).

If the work can be done from anywhere and the Texas address isn't a hard-and-fast requirement and he needed another person to do copy-editing or anything else on the mistake-catching/words-oriented end of things, I'd be really interested.

Most of what he needs is content-input and formatting blather, on the coding side of things. It's a teachable skill set, though obviously it's easier to do if you have some experience, and also easier to learn if you're accessible in person, rather than remotely located. There aren't lots of things to do right now, but I'm forwarding all these responses to him and when some of those overwhelming projects start going into production he'll let me know exactly what he needs done. Or maybe come to this thread and see if he's got a job that fits the offers.

Well, I also have some experience on the coding side of things, though most of it isn't recent and none of it's with the specific set of tools which he's using. But I learn that sort of thing fairly quickly and would be interested in working on it given the chance. So, y'know, just thought I'd put that out there.

Damn. Read your first paragraph and went "Yay! That's me!". Read the second one and ... :-( I'm in the UK.

I am in Texas and looking for employment! I will graduate in December with a Masters in Plant Biology. I am mainly looking for something to get me through December as I have no funding through the University, but I am very interested in something more long term. All of my employment experience is lab-based, but I think a lot of my skills would easily transfer to other settings!

Sweet! I can easily handle formatting-type things! I have plenty of basic HTML/CSS experience, but stopped playing with that stuff when I started school again. I'm currently in Austin, but can get around as needed.

Thanks so much!

I live in Texas and have 5 years of editing experience.

Drop me a line at masmith1983 at gmail dot com if you're still looking for people.

If a Texas address is negotiable, I'm a soon-to-be California resident with ninja editing skills. References on request.

If the Texas address is negotiable and your friend needs anything on the word and editing oriented end of the spectrum, I'd be interested.

If the TX address isn't required, my English-major husband is looking for work. He can copyedit but would also be interested in just about any other positions they're hiring for.

I'd love for you to send me an email and let me know what kinds of positions are open or let me know how to find out. Thanks! girly_curl_3@livejournal.com

If there's any work whatsoever left after the other commenters are done with it...I'm also outside TX, but I can copy edit like nobody's business. I've edited software documentation and a legal journal, so technical writing is no problem.

[identity profile] sanura.livejournal.com 2010-07-30 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I pretty much have the copyediting down, until they start doing multiple concurrent projects. Most of what he needs (soonish, but not NOW) is content-input and formatting blather, on the coding side of things. XML editing?

[personal profile] ursamajor 2010-07-30 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Based on what you've been saying about it being on the coding end of things, this would be pretty much ideal contract work for me. I'm decently tech-savvy (can write (X)HTML and CSS from scratch, can modify JavaScript and PHP to suit my needs, am beginner-level-Perl-programmer and learning!), and pick technical things up quickly. I also have a fair bit of experience with the Adobe suite and have worked with QuarkXpress in the past, if that's relevant to the design processing part.

(I'm a kickass proofreader and grammatician and a decent copyeditor, but it sounds like you've got that end of things covered for now.)

I'm outside Texas, but if this part ends up being negotiable, I'd be very interested.

[identity profile] eccentrikita.livejournal.com 2010-08-01 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
One more response for you if the Texas address is negotiable.

I have experience in digitizing and XML-coding projects as part of my ongoing work towards a BA in English with an Editing and Publishing certificate. I am not a code wizard, but I can understand directions given and follow them.

Digital and next-gen publishing is such an exciting field. I would be delighted to have the opportunity to get some experience in it.
