It's Friday a week after the last Suits episode aired, which means it's time for

Sam's Three Things About Suits!

Spoilers for 2.03, You Don't Get To De-Gift The Tea Service, Asshat

1. MIKE AND HAROLD. If this were not a show about Mike and Harvey, I would watch a show about Mike and Harold. It would be the best sitcom ever.

2. DONNA AND RACHEL. I don't even like Rachel but Harriet Spector and Michelle Ross were pretty much the best thing ever. EVER.

3. I get the feeling Hardman is supposed to be ambiguous, like is-he-isn't-he evil, but no, he's pretty much evil. And Mike needs to stop falling for his bullshit. Mike, I know you are starved for affection, but just because he calls himself your coach doesn't mean he likes you. Also why are you so starved for affection, your grandmother is the most awesome octogenarian on television and Sir spanked you like four times during this episode.

3a. I cannot believe Louis Litt won that episode. I didn't want him to. But he legitimately won that episode. (Mind you, only because I expect that level of awesome out of Donna.)

Louis did win it, and justifiably so. The man's social skills are abysmal but that doesn't mean he an incompetent either as a lawyer or in the way he structures the associates' workload (the way he carries it out is another matter). His last scene with Jessica was perfect.

And I rather hope the gift to Louis ends up being a smoking gun for the season. Other than the comedy value for what he recorded on it this episode.

Louis is sort of becoming one of my favorite characters? I don't entirely approve of this shift.

When they let Louis be *smart* which he obviously has to be to get that job, he's more awesome, more interesting, and more threatening to Harvey & Mike. WIN-WIN-WIN!

Rachel's face when that dude called her out on having the Constitution memorized was A+

If they wrote Louis consistently, he would be a super-awesome character (or a useless asshole, but that doesn't really make sense in the context of a law firm). Of course, I have noticed that in this show, I don't actually like most of the characters; Harvey frequently does things that make me go, "Sorry, just because you're the secondary protagonist and classically handsome doesn't mean I'm going to accept that that sort of behaviour is okay." More than once, he has done stuff that made me feel like Louis could have done exactly the same thing, and we would have been meant to hate him for it, but because Harvey is pretty we are supposed to adore him.

And then I wonder if they want me to feel that way on purpose, because if they do, good for them, but given the general standard of the writing I really don't think so.

Suits is supposed to be the Mike-and-Harvey show, but I kind of don't give a shit about Mike and his love triangles fractals and I literally can't remember the last time Harvey did anything interesting except live in the World's Most Beautiful Condo.

Jessica's power struggles with Hardman? Loving it. Donna and Rachel discovering the exciting world of work-life balance? Loving it. Every single thing Louis has ever done? LOVING IT.

But all of Mike's conflicts boil down to "My bleeding heart is poorly suited to the ruthless world of corporate law! :(" and Harvey could wrap up every one of his plots by the end of the cold open if he would just stop alienating the entire goddamn universe with his arrogance.

As for Hardman... I have no idea what to think. As of this episode, he has yet to do anything unambiguously evil, and so far everything he's done "to" Jessica and Harvey has been both defensive and measured. I almost hope he does start being more obviously a Bad Guy, because I don't really love watching our protagonists be assholes to a grieving widower. I guess we'll see.
