1. Go to page 77 (or 7) of your current ms. (I chose Tunnel over Dead Isle because it's newer.)
2. Go to line 7
3. Copy down the next 7 lines – sentences or paragraphs – and post them as they’re written.
4. Tag 7 other authors. I never like to oblige people to do stuff, so uh: hi Cafe, consider yourself tagged!

Admittedly my newest project isn't in Word yet so I just hit page-down seven times and counted from the top. This is one of the few actually-written scenes I have for Tunnel, but I'm pretty sure you are getting the Most Awesome scene of the whole thing to date:

He's always been a very sad dragon. )
Okay kids, put your Imagination Caps on.

I don't know about you all, but for me, the rest of 2011's television schedule is stretching out like a vast wasteland. White Collar and Sherlock aren't back until next year, Eureka's been cancelled, and god knows when Doctor Who is coming back.

So here's the game: If you could convince your favourite television network to air an imaginary show, what would that show be about?

The rules:

1. No remakes.
2. No adaptations of books/comics/etc.
3. No new seasons of pre-existing shows.
4. No spinoffs.
5. No exploiting loopholes in these rules.

[livejournal.com profile] amand_r, [livejournal.com profile] gypsylady, and I just invented it.

Take any song and replace "work" "walk" or another similar W word with "wank".

I've been wanking on the railroad, allll the livelong day!

Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] spiderine:

I would like all my LJ friends to comment about how you got to know me. But I want you to LIE. That's right. Just make it up. If you'd like, copy this to your journal so others can do the same.

I'll start! On my twenty-first birthday I received a mysterious unmarked envelope containing a treasure map. After years of labouring fervently to decode it, including an encounter with some wildebeests that I'd really rather not talk about, I traveled to a hidden island off the coast of New England and began to dig. When my shovel finally hit something solid, I unearthed an ancient tin box in which was tucked, with the greatest of care, this livejournal.

And the rest, of course, is history.
This is supposed to be a Peace Dove. I think it looks more like a hawk about to steal your chihuahua out of your backyard, but perhaps I'm biased.

I ALSO HAVE A MEME FOR YOU. Via [livejournal.com profile] thefannishwaldo: The Album Cover Meme )
[livejournal.com profile] idancewithlife linked me last night to BibliOz, which has a neat little widget where you can look up what books were bestsellers on the day you were born. This comment lower down in my journal made me think about the amusing link between horoscopes and books, and how Peyton Place was a good "sign" to be born under. I myself was born under The Last Enchantment, with Dead Zone rising.

Arthurian myth and literary horror. Yeah, seems about right.

So what signs were you born under, Cafe?

Talking of Arthurian myth, another one for my <1000 challenge:

Title: Harry Of The Caves
Rating: PG
Warnings: None.
Summary: Merlin doesn't trust this new tournament knight at all.

( Tournament time was always a brilliant time in Camelot. )
LOL, I'm starting to feel like a news anchor...TODAY'S LINKS!

[livejournal.com profile] bluejeanius is going to be at Pasadena ComicCon this weekend, selling Pretty Things and publicising Girls Drawing Girls. Stop by and say hello!

Mark Twain's autobiography is finally going to be printed, now that his stipulation that it not go to press for 100 years after his death has been satisfied. As much as I'd like to say I'm going to read this, I'm probably not. I'll wait till one of you guys does and hit the highlights. If he admits to doing hard drugs or hanging out with someone named Data, lemme know.

All I learned from the article on Dangerous Muffins is that I need to find a Caribou Coffee so that I can try a French Toast Muffin.

"Persona", a series of portraits of people and the contents of their bags, was posted to Kempt this morning. I kind of think the concept is flawed on a couple of levels; the things I carry in my messenger bag are the things I need in the course of a day, not necessarily what's important to me. But, as an exercise:

Dayplanner and notebook, wallet, medication box, camera, snack bar, passport, pen, flashdrive, and building access keycard. I should have included my keys but since I carry them in my pocket and not my messenger bag, I didn't think about it.

Yep, my passport goes with me everywhere. Damn good thing too, sometimes it's the only ID that places like tow yards and libraries will accept.

I used to do a meme -- this is one of the worst losses of the hack -- where I asked people to think of something they wanted, either right that moment or for the future or in any sense really. The rules were that you had only one word in which to express that desire, and you couldn't cheat by using the subject line, running words together, or adding parentheticals. Just one word.

I totally stole this from an episode of One Tree Hill (don't judge).

I thought I'd modify it, given what I learned at the conference, so here is my question for you: If you could read a fiction book right now about anything -- a genre, a character, a theme, an event, anything -- and you only had one word in which to describe it, what would that word be?

IP logging is off, feel free to comment either with your name or anon. HAVE FUN. :D
So, I have this tree. This tiny tree. That I would send you photos of, but I think my camera is broken (another whole post that I'll get to later). And for this tiny sad Christmas tree I have six whole ornaments. Which obviously is not enough.

Back in undergrad we had a Christmas tree for the department and in my junior year we were forced to get rid of several of the better ornaments, including the garland of condoms and lube that I had made sophomore year, because we had a huge shipment of prospective freshmen coming in late that year and we didn't want to terrify their parents. So we had to come up with new ornaments, and I decided to take a bunch of photos I'd snapped of the students and faculty, on and offstage, paste colour printouts onto green and red construction paper, and hang them as ornaments. Because I'm just that awesome.

I've kind of done the photo meme thing, so I thought instead I would make a literary tree. My tree is too small to hold a word if everyone donated one, but please feel free to suggest a word (note: A SINGLE WORD. Don't post me a word list!) that I should hang on the tree. I will choose the ones I like most, print them out, and hang them up. Foreign languages welcome.

MEME. I found this in an old entry and thought it looked fun. Originally adapted from another meme, stolen from [livejournal.com profile] cawti who stole it from [livejournal.com profile] marinarusalka.

Go to your icons page in Livejournal and look at the first two icons (the one on the right and the one on the left). Pair up the characters in the two icons. Go to the next two and do the same until you have a list of ships. Then...well, write 'em.

I'm not going to write 'em, but how much fun is this?

My favourite is John Constantine/Ellis Graveworthy )

I may have an overabundance of Ianto icons.
Numbers are dancing in front of my eyes...

I spent all morning, when I wasn't actively working, on reconstructing the LJ. I've downloaded everything Wayback has on 2004 and saved it to the flash drive; January through March is mostly uploaded, though there are a handful of hard-to-code posts, polls, and photo updates that I'm going to have to deal with.

One of the things I stumbled across was a meme I'd posted nearly five years ago, about my LJ activity. It turned out that the website for the meme was still active, so I did it again. Interesting to see what's changed and what hasn't.

Sam's LJ Activity in January 2004 and October 2008: )

Look at your LJ userpics list. If you have fewer than twenty icons, post them all. If you have between twenty and fifty icons, pick every fifth one. If you have between fifty and seventy-five icons, pick every seventh one. If you have over seventy-five icons, pick every tenth one. List them on your LJ, and tell everyone exactly why you have it, why it's interesting to you, and what significance it has.

explanations! )

I'm waiting to buy frames before I hang my posters, but my walls are looking a little bare. The last place I had, I hung maps all over the walls because I was still learning the city, but I don't have as much need for the maps or Googlemap printouts anymore, and I do want to hang SOMETHING up, even if only temporarily. And I thought, the Cafe might like to have a hand.

So! Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to supply me with an image I can print out and hang on my wall. You only get to give me one, so none of this posting eighteen images stuff and trying to make me choose, I know you tricksy kids. :D If you post more than one I'll just take the first you posted.

Broad guidelines are that it should be black and white (or look good in black and white, since I don't have a colour printer), and preferably there shouldn't be one huge block of dark colour since those don't look as good when they're printed on my cheap work laserjet. Other than that, anything goes -- it can be something you like, something that reminds you of me, something you think would look cool on my wall. I'll collage them together and hang them up and post a photo so everyone can see.

Deal? Good.

Fun meme time!

Post the first line of each of your last 20 fanfics.

I often open with peoples' names. )
Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] dargie. This is the "Omnivore's Hundred" as compiled by Very Good Taste.

1) Copy this list into your blog or journal, including these instructions.
2) Bold all the items you’ve eaten.
3) Cross out any items that you would never consider eating (Note from me: While I've struckthrough a few items, that's always on the understanding that I wouldn't seek these foods out or pay for them. If I were offered a taste, I'd still give it a go. :D)
4) Optional extra: Post a comment at www.verygoodtaste.co.uk linking to your results. (You can also go here to find links to explanations of the less-identifiable foods).

Have: Eaten Scrapple. Have Not: Encountered Pho. )

Looks like I have some eatin' ahead of me...
Man, the Sun-Times has a reputation for being a terrible newspaper, but today it's especially bad. The cover is something to do with our governor wanting reform, I don't even know, but it has a huge photoshopped image of the governor's face on John Wayne's body.

That's right. Our governor's hed is indeed pastede on, yay. The second-biggest newspaper in Chicago is one tiny step from plastering LOLcats on its cover. Which frankly would increase my opinion of them, because who knew the Sun-Times could be so hip to current trends?

Also, this morning's edition, and you can go to the website if you don't believe me, lists the weather as "Steamy".

I'm in a much less rotten mood this morning than last night; my angst and woe about leaving the flat is equal parts about inconvenience over having to move at a terrible time of year for moving, and not getting to live with R anymore. But I think I can circumvent both of those issues if I rent a studio in M and B's building; it's right next door, so moving would be easy, it's cheaper than the rent I'm paying now, and I'd still be close enough to hang out with R and watch Wheel in the evenings and formally disdain my replacement. If I can just get to the bigger studio before someone grabs it, and get them to rent it to me starting in August, everything will be fine.

Also, there's a steampunk quiz meme going around, and I am:

The Aetherist Bodger

The aether carries the information, the aether is information. You are one of the few who know the ins and outs of Aether Terminals. You can access information across the Aethersphere, tapping into the Aetherpipes of anyone you want and stealing the information stored in their datatanks. Some think of you as a myth, a legend created to scare people.

You are no myth or legend. You are quite real, and you are currently reading the Queen’s AetherMissives.

Jesus, could that be any more fitting if it tried? :D
FOR GRATE WIN, office is closing at 2pm tomorrow. YAY THREE AND A QUARTER DAY WEEKEND!

In the meantime, here is a toy I forgot all about: googlism.

I could spend hours on this site, entering random words. Basically, it uses google to find all phrases where the word you enter is followed by "is". So, for example, I entered "Sam". It tells me that:

sam is carbon neutral
sam is leading in r (uh....)
sam is in big trouble
sam is sexy
sam is really sexy (Well!)
sam is usually portrayed with a goatee
sam is missing a story arc
sam is on the injured list
sam is indeed more beautiful in person than on tv

Which is pretty funny to begin with, but then you enter random fandom words and get stuff like:

ianto is available as a solo artist accompanying himself on electro

O RLY? )
All right, meme answers. :) I've replaced the numbers with character names, in your questions. I've occasionally left out a question if there were more than two asked, and once in a while, I admit, I may have mocked slightly. But it's always out of love!

I answered the first fifty questions only. Sorry, but that was all I had in me. *collapses over keyboard*

The List. )

The Questions And Answers. )

And that's all he wrote. Hope it's been fun for you guys -- it was for me!
Okay, I want something to come back to after lunch, other than the mail. This meme's been going round for a while, so why not.

I have made a list of fifteen characters and assigned each of them a number. To make it fair, given my promiscuous polyfandom, I will tell you that the characters are from Harry Potter, Discworld, Torchwood, classic mystery novels, and for a bit of flair, Jack&Ellis.

You can ask any question you like about any of the numbers, singly or in combination. I don't know how many questions I'll get, but I'm going to limit questions to no more than two per person, and fifty total, just in case. :)

I will then post the list of names, questions, and their answers.

Look! People drew stuff :D

Jean and Tealin have done a ton of Jack&Ellis art, which you can see at the comm.

And if you want to see some awesome Cartographer's Craft and Stealing-Harry-verse art, check it out here!

"Cartographer" is very hard to type with one hand. I BROUGHT IT ON MYSELF. :D

Also, meme. Requires nearly no typing! Random Wikipedia Article Band! )
