Love, love, love the fic. Love the twist I never saw coming, the Doctor cameo, the cheekiness of young Jack. But your title makes this superannuated former English major feel roughly the way the Doctor does about Jack. Messing the subjunctive about like that, aren't you producing some kind of temporal anomaly (as it were)? I'm wondering why you didn't just use 'Would I were'?

Oh, yes :) Fabulous :)

Wow--I should have seen the surprise about "Levy" coming, I guess, but I didn't.

I love the details, and how much young Jack is like Jack will be later, but not as hardened yet.

I like the idea that someday we'll get a ginger Doctor.

whoa... *is impressed*
thanks sam.

Mmmmmmmm, Torchwood prequel/sequel space opera! The whole thing reminds me of Heinlein on a number of levels, only... gayer.

Plus, points for ginger fashion victim Doctor!

I must say, I wouldn't say no to more of the past / future / whatever Jack in this universe.

Sam, you are brilliant and I wish I had a tenth of your writing skill. I am naming my next cat in your honor.
More in this vein, please!!

EPIC. In every sense of the word.

Oh! What a beautiful story! I love it to pieces, especially how after all the centuries, Jack still remembers Ianto. It feeds my Ianto-obsession just perfectly right now.

Oh, lovely. I loved soldier!Jack. And older!Jack too, Great story.

*breathes in* Dammit, you know how to write these characters like no one else. *sighs* Fucking AWESOME, as always.

(Yeah, I've read before, but I was too shy to say anything. *Snort*)

This is an awesome story, I love how you create the world of the colonies so perfectly. I loved Lo's descriptions of the Flyers, it sounded so military and, perhaps, how people might describe aliens if aliens were normal things to describe.

I was annoyed at first when Levy was telling Lo what to do with his life - I wondered why Jack didn't get a hand in his own destiny, as he's such a strong character - but then Levy turned out to be Jack so it was ok :D

I have such a time travel kink. And this satisfies it mightily. I just adore this story - Lo is gorgeous and Levy is indeed 'perfection'. Thanks for a great story.

Oh, such gorgeous back story. I feel completely satiated after reading this. Like I'd been waiting for these pieces of Jack's life all along but didn't know it until I saw it. And it feels so right now that I have.

Hi Sam, I read this story a while ago and didn't comment but it hasn't left me. The sheer cleverness and the sweetness of the story (well I think it's sweet) has stayed with me. It has a real Robert Heinlein feel to it - "By His Bootlaces" the first thing I ever read like this a very long time ago.
wonderful

Now that I've buttered you up. Please may I borrow your description of the Fliers for my own time travel twist that will bring the dreadful creatures to Earth and Cardiff and our team. They will then torture poor Jack, poison Ianto and scare the f**k out of the team.

I think you've just rewritten my personal canon for the Boeshane war. One of the things that bugs me in both Who and Torchwood is the implication from the Doctor and others that Jack's military image is just an affectation, so I love finding military!Jack fic, and there's way too little of it from this time period. But I have no doubt that even if there were a ton of it, this would still be among the best.

The first half would need very, very little reworking to be the start of a slightly longer and very readable piece of original fiction. You set the characters of Levy and Lo very quickly and well. I didn't really enjoy the ending as much as I enjoyed the first part (i.e. all of the Levy/Lo) and would have liked it to continue - almost as if the storyline was too 'strong' to be fanfiction, which I know is silly, since there's sterling fanfiction out there (including yours).

So very Jack. And I adored the listing of his 'resume.' The rhythm of it was gorgeous.

About damn time the Doctor got to be ginger.

I have to say I think it's disturbingly plausible that Jack should loop back on himself yet again. He seems to have a real talent for it, really.

I love this idea and setting for Jack's backstory.
And then, I did ir because I'd already done it.

... Apparently I have managed to miss an awful lot. How I didn't read this at the time, I don't know, but I love it. And have to go see what else I've missed.

Ginger Doctor! Yay!

I love the name "Lo" for Jack. It works. Even sounds good when coupled up with Gray. ^_^
