And Lis Sladen is dead. Which I meant to address yesterday but kept avoiding or forgetting. I kind of blame it on the news breaking over Twitter. I think it's a shame that this is how we found out about it, and I kind of hope the people who actually broke it had permission, because otherwise that's a bit classless.

Um, but the point is, Elisabeth Sladen, who played Sarah Jane Smith on Classic Who, New Who, and in the Sarah Jane Adventures, passed away yesterday. She was awesome, and she played Sarah Jane as a badass and like a boss, and by all accounts she was a good person.

I just want you to know that gif made me tear up. I mourn the passing of Ms. Sladen who I absolutely loved as Sarah Jane. I'm sure she continues on in her adventures.

The BBC announced it yesterday afternoon (UK time) and it zipped across twitter and facebook very quickly, but I think the initial announcement came from Auntie Beeb (I saw the breaking news banner on the News website before it exploded across facebook). It was a real shock - very sad news.

I saw via BBC, she was (and is) my favorite companion.

I rewatched School Reunion last night and had a good cry.

I think it broke via the BBC. I also found out via twitter, but only because I happened to be on it, as it were.

It was all over everywhere yesterday, it seemed. I saw the news first at the Gallifrey Base site, then it just exploded all over Twitter. So, so sad as she was so young and active, with plans to do more SJA episodes and Big Finish audios with Tom Baker. There are lovely tributes from Tom Baker and Matt Smith and David Tennant and John Barrowman and Russell T Davies. Stay away from the CBBC site, though, unless you want to cry all over your desk. They're inviting kids to post how they feel on the Sarah Jane Adventures site - it's okay to be sad about this news, they say, and then just hundreds of kids posting. My own kids are really bummed, they love SJA.

Your icon and that .gif just made me tear up. I read the news yesterday and it is one of those things that sinks in very slowly and then is absolutely and utterly gutting.

There's not a lot I can think of, or say, except that I hope it was peaceful. That gif is definitely making me choke up. I've only ever seen her on Doctor Who, but I loved how fearless her character was.

I only knew her from New Who. Your gif is SO how I see her, as though life were such an adventure and she can't wait to see what's around the bend. Her presence will be much missed.

I spent a lot of today in work reading tributes and scaring the boys by going all woe-faced but being unable to give a rational explanation any better than 'You know when John Peel died? WORSE.'

Sobbed. I can't even claim to be a fan. Just a kid that watched it and loved Dr Who in the 80s. Thanks for a great link even if it made me howl.

Oh god, what they said. I thought I got my crying for her out yesterday when my sister told me, but apparently not.

This makes me so sad. I always thought of her as a woman to aspire to with such energy for life. I really can't believe she's gone.

palmer_kun texted me about it. I think he got it off Twitter. I was very sad when I heard.

I just hope she got to have her family with her at the end, and she knew she was loved. And I kinda hope she knew how Who fans felt about her, too. Sarah Jane was SUCH an ass-kicker.

She was so awesome and will be sadly missed. When S4 of Sarah Jane Adventures comes out on DVD it believe I will watch it with sadness and joy.

Well, shit. I met her once years and years ago; got her autograph on a fabric swatch that I sewed to my Doctor Who scarf like the unspeakable geek that I was at the time (and still am.) She was a very nice person and put up with a hell of a lot from a bunch of starry-eyed American fangirls/fanboys. Safe journey to her.

Oh man, you had to go and say "like a boss," because my brain, in its infinite weirdness, came up with this:

...so yeah, there's my strange little tribute to Liz Sladen. I didn't even know she was sick, and although I've not seen tons of episodes from her time as a companion, I had seen enough to know that Sarah Jane was made of win of and epicness.

Not sure if this is Radio Free Monday material or not, but a couple of fangirls started a justgiving page in Lis Sladen's memory HERE (http://www.justgiving.com/inmemoryofelisabethsladen) They hoped to get a couple of hundred pounds, and it's already over 2000.

oh, thank you Sam. I wasn't involved in setting up the page, but I have been signal-boosting where I can, It'd be great to see in in the RFM. She was my first companion, in the Tom-Baker-on-PBS days.
