(no subject)

So, Lucky took All The Tests yesterday and did eventually get to go home last night, which is probably just as well. He's happier there, and happiness does impact health, and while Emmy is anxious about him coming to her awards ceremony I think she's also glad he gets to go. Reasonably happy ending to a slightly terrifying episode, and those of you who predicted Mum would go on a heart-health kick are not wrong.

I realised I never really explained why doors were thwarting me yesterday, but the short version is that a new member of the custodial staff locked all the doors on all our floors after cleaning the offices on Wednesday night. This isn't a big deal -- anyone who didn't have their keys just borrowed my Master Key -- except in one department. Be shocked, it's the department that pays 25% of my salary and wants 75% of my time. I really need a catchier name for them. Perhaps "Entitled Inc".

They just did a remodel and some of the new doors they installed were never "keyed" to our master key -- in other words, they have individualised locks that the master key doesn't fit.

This is Not My Fault. I'm not the one whose job it was to key the doors. I'm also not the one who lost the keys that actually do fit those doors. And yet, who gets nasty passive-aggro bullshit about them having to drill the locks out? Oh that would be me. (I got nasty passive-aggro shit about carpet-cleaning, too. She CC'd my boss on that one, which just made him LOL.)

It's fine, I've spent over half my life on the internet and half of that as a BNF, I've had way worse than their crap on a good day.

So glad Lucky's okay.

And way to apply Internet Patience to RL.

Geeze. And to think I've been annoyed by all the e-mails lately about how I'm supposed to reprioritize 30 time-sensitive projects in order of what the execs think is important...without changing any of the due dates. At least those are irrational requests about things that actually ARE my problems!

I hope Friday treats you better than Thursday did.

Glad things going okay with your family, cross fingers.

Glad to hear about Lucky (it is true about happiness & health).

Grah re: doors. What a goat rodeo.

...you *would* get along with jumperfucker.

(I know, right? -facepalm-)

(I gave him a cookie recipe yesterday, which Mycroft has bookmarked. WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME. I'M PLAYING MYSELF.)

That`s good news about your stepdad. Hopefully that will be the last scare.
um- may Iask what a BNF is?

[identity profile] jonaht.livejournal.com 2011-06-03 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I,m slow today. What does that mean?

See my second comment. Usually a fanwriter or fanartist with a large following.

Fanlore Wiki definition (http://fanlore.org/wiki/Big_Name_Fan).

[identity profile] jonaht.livejournal.com 2011-06-03 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
lols. You're good!

[identity profile] copperbadge.livejournal.com 2011-06-03 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)
BNF stands for Big Name Fan -- it's a designation for people with a lot of readers or pull in fandom. It's not usually used in a positive way, because BNFs tend to wade into wank a lot. I try not to throw it around, but it'd be annoyingly false modesty to deny it's what I am. :)

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2011-06-03 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, but you don't wade into wank, wank wades into YOU!

... wait, that sounds really gross, doesn't it ...

THE INTERNET IS STICKY, TWIRLY.

Now I'm picturing the taffy-pulling machine at the candyshop downtown. Great. XD

Mmmm, thank you for reminding me I have a stockpile of delicious salt-water taffy on my desk.

I love how this thread went from information inquiry to somewhat disturbing imagery to mmmm, candy.

Excellent news about your stepfather!

Suggest to your boss that he consider cost-recovery from that department on their wasting of your time. I had parts of marketing continually stealing my subeditors until I started billing them a good freelance hourly rate for my staff. They stopped and negotiated a more meagre actual freelance rate for the kids to do the work out of hours. The one thing that sort of person actually cares about is looking good on paper, and a budget blowout does for them what ethical considerations do for the rest of us.

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2011-06-03 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Wouldn't it just have been easier to call back the custodian who had copies of all the keys than to drill out the locks? Or is this too much lateral thinking for Entitled Inc.?

Also: Hurrah for Lucky getting to go home! And the heart-health kick is probably best for everyone, especially in TEXAS.

[identity profile] copperbadge.livejournal.com 2011-06-03 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, but the custodian didn't use keys. He used the lock-buttons on the insides of the doorknobs. :D

Ohhhhh, SMART.

Oh, those things are deadly. We have them at our office too, so that there are certain doors that must never shut because it's a job and a half to unlock them again.

[identity profile] dreamwaffles.livejournal.com 2011-06-03 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, if they don't have the hole on the opposite side, they're a bitch to pick.

(...I locked myself in places too many times as a child.)

[identity profile] lots42.livejournal.com 2011-06-03 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
At Blockbuster we used to have to call the nimble employee whenever someone locked the manager's office again. Thank god he lived close.

I'm glad Lucky got to go home and things are relatively okay.

(Also, giggling a bit at the perspective-giving powers of the internet.)

[identity profile] dreamwaffles.livejournal.com 2011-06-03 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm...glad that Internet crap has prepared you to deal with Real Life crap, then, in some ways? IDK. XD

(actually, now that you mention it, thanks to hanging out on a particularly...um...vehement messageboard for several years, it takes a lot to make me actually angry. Hadn't thought about that before.)

Also I'm really glad that Lucky is doing okay. <3

[identity profile] indyanne.livejournal.com 2011-06-03 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Glad to hear Lucky is home - and that he took all the tests! I'm sure your mother is greatly relieved, too. Nothing pushes you into panicky brain-squirrel mode faster than hearing "Your husband's had a heart attack."

[identity profile] rua-m.livejournal.com 2011-06-03 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so glad Lucky's doing ok - a great relief to everybody :)

Also, interesting, I never realised that BNF was a pejorative term. I thought it was a simple statement of fact. I guess I've not been in fandom long enough...

[identity profile] copperbadge.livejournal.com 2011-06-03 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It wasn't, at one time, and these days it's slowly regaining neutral status, but for a while there especially in the mid-00s it was quite pejorative, and unfortunately rather deservedly so in some fandoms...

[personal profile] minkrose 2011-06-03 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't believe they lost the keys! Key control is the first step in security, and if you mess that up, it's your OWN fault. Argh!!

So glad to hear Lucky gets to go home! I hope he can come back from this. My uncle's been dealing with some heart issues for a couple years now.
So, I have a RL friend who goes by Lucky and so this whole thing has been kind of confusing to my brain. Worrying-about-Lucky-but-not-THAT-Lucky.

[identity profile] lots42.livejournal.com 2011-06-03 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Holy shit, you work in a 'Hitman: Contracts' game level.

Watch out for bald guys.

[identity profile] tardis-stowaway.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
Glad to hear that Lucky is okay, considering. I hope his health continues to improve.

Too bad you didn't have a sonic screwdriver at work today! I like your point about the internet teaching Useful Life Skills like dealing with obnoxious people.
