WELCOME TO THE SAM'S CAFE JOB FAIR, where our motto is "Being unemployed is some bullshit. Give me a job."

We are disorganized, but that's excellent preparation for life!

Basically, the idea is to bring all three thousand of us together in an orgy of job-seeking. We ask for advice and give advice and network without all the really gross slimy bits of networking.

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A JOB...leave a comment! Tell us what you're looking for and where, and what your qualifications are, to the degree that you're comfortable.

IF YOUR PLACE OF WORK IS HIRING...leave a comment! Tell us what the job is and where, and what kind of person you're looking for, again, to the degree that you're comfortable.

Feel free to post anonymously if you wish, especially if you're linking to a resume or LinkedIn and don't want your screen name associated with your facetime identity.

Make sure you also read the comments, in case a match is out there waiting for you, or a colleague in your field has also commented and could be a good connection. If you have questions about applying for jobs or interviewing or anything career-related, ask! If you have some awesome advice to give, now's the time to share it!

If you're curious about how this has worked before, you can check out the previous two, and you may want to have a look at the Job Advice Sub-Thread [livejournal.com profile] snaxcident started last time.

Have at it, and keep checking back!

I work for a company that isn't completely souless who needs a few employees.

It is a TELEPHONE job. It is not glamourous, but they hire regularly and if you need to pay rent, u need to pay rent. Right now, there are two types of openings. There's service, which is straight-up $12/hr, full and part time. It is NOT a hard gig. Then there's sales positions where you get a small base pay, ($9/hr) but commissions (which, if you're mediocre to awesome, will net you more more like $14/hour now, and if you don't blow it and stay average to awesome, $20-30/an hour Jan/Feb/March).

Since I'd rather not let all the universe (ie, internetz) know the name of the company I work for, PM me, and I'll link you.

Good luck and stay positive, guys!!! I was unemployed for A YEAR and must have sent out 100 resumes and filled out a million of those employee questionaires before finding anything. Don't give up hope!

If you like working with kids and are still looking for work when you graduate in the spring, you can apply to be a substitute teacher in the city and county school systems. It pays $90+ a day - minimum requirements are bachelor's and 2.5 GPA. http://www.mcsk12.net/HR/aboutmcs_human_resources_sub_teacher_info.asp

You could look for sub positions for art/fine arts teachers.

You know I looked about a year ago but not recently. I'd certainly love to work anywhere talking about art or history. Thanks for the suggestion hon.

[identity profile] wellowned.livejournal.com 2011-09-05 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
so the only thing i took from this is that y'all are familiar with Tessitura? any pointers? i just applied for a job that works in our center for the arts and part of the description was familiarity with Tessitura. which, sadly, i'm unfamiliar with but i am familiar with other databases like Peoplesoft and Onbase (academic ones, i guess).

just curious.

[identity profile] copperbadge.livejournal.com 2011-09-05 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
Tessitura is actually pretty easy to learn. It's more that it's awkward about certain things -- it's meant to be so broad-reaching that sometimes simple tasks get obscured in all the other shit it can do. And there are financial functions that are a pain in the ass, unnecessarily complicated, plus it tends to slow way down if the computers aren't top speed.

[identity profile] wellowned.livejournal.com 2011-09-05 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
i live in kentucky. i'm used to computers that are slow and a pain.

so long as it's pretty easy to learn, then i should be ok. i'm usually very adept at picking up new programs. i just hope i'm qualified enough for the job if they decide to interview me. i just got shafted at my academia job, and am in that limbo of educated, qualified, but not qualified enough.

[identity profile] copperbadge.livejournal.com 2011-09-05 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
Well, if they ask about Tessitura, say that you're not familiar with the program, but you've used others like it and from your conversations with other theatre professionals you don't believe it will be difficult to learn. :D

Jobs in Berkshire, UK (reading/bracknell area)

[identity profile] seshat1.livejournal.com 2011-09-05 09:14 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a project manager in the transportation industry. There are pretty much no jobs in the uk in that industry at the moment, as the government isn't spending any money if they can help it, and I am struggling to find other things to apply for - all the jobs I find require relevant experience. :(

I come from a technical background, I have a maths degree and do motorway traffic data analysis as part of my current role. I know a lot about roadside technology and roadworks, and have done economic assessment of technology schemes. I am good with people and don't mind public speaking. I also tutor GCSE maths in my spare time, in case that's a useful piece of information!

Any advice on relevant roles, new fields that I should consider looking for roles in or knowledge of PM type roles near(ish) Reading would really be appreciated. I am employed at the moment, but there is a chance that won't be the case for too much longer, which is why I am looking.

Thanks!

Re: Will work for money: London area / any advice re: the PGCE/teacher training?

[identity profile] debitha.livejournal.com 2011-09-05 01:36 pm (UTC)(link)
You could consider finding a local volunteer/charity group who need administrative help. They don't care if you don't really have experience, they'll just be grateful for anything you can do to help. It's a great way to get experience, and it looks good on your CV, showing that you are prepared to work while you aren't working, as such. Agencies love it.

Plus, you know, it's something constructive to do, which can be helpful when you're in that whole soul-destroying job-seeking phase.

Translator German <-> English (freelance)

[identity profile] ved-vies-kto.livejournal.com 2011-09-05 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Late to this, but I guess it doesn't hurt.

I'm looking for translation jobs between English and German (could possibly also do Norwegian to German). I'm about a year away from a MA in English Literature (with minors in Sociology and Art History) at a German university. I'm familiar with American and British English, having spent 10+ months in both the US and the U.K.
Since I'm just starting out I might be willing to do small jobs for non-profits and individuals for free to get some work experience under my belt.

Maybe I should add "honesty in ad writing" as an ability?! Really! I do not want anyone to come into a job thinking it's the greatest thing, and working at a family-owned place is wonderful. I think you would be so much fun to work with! My current college-bound co worker got her nipples pierced, and I was showing her some wonderful sites for Fun Things To get for the new pircings. She's quite excited! *GG*

LOOKING FOR WORK IN IOWA

[identity profile] sunsetsinthewes.livejournal.com 2011-09-05 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm desperately looking for any and all work in Clinton, IA. I have over a decade experience in serving, retail, and customer service. I have two years experience in an office setting, as a receptionist (primarily, I answered phones, redirected calls, and photocopied crap). I'm extremely flexible regarding hours, travel time, whatnot. I've also worked as a maid, for a maid service, for about two or three years total.

If I can help anyone else in any way, please let me know.

Also, there's a company located in Clinton, IA that's hunting for truck drivers in the worst way, I know. I've next to no knowledge of the industry, but maybe the info can help someone out?

Re: Will work for money: London area / any advice re: the PGCE/teacher training?

(Anonymous) 2011-09-05 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, I did my PGCE course last year (Science, but I guess the application process is similar). Some advice - my course didn't accept anyone that didn't have at least 2 weeks' experience observing in a school. Email every single Head of Department in every school you can find locally, and ask if you can sit in on lessons and observe. You probably won't get much luck at first due to beginning-of-term mania, but keep at it! Depending on your schedule flexibility, look into either doing a couple of weeks all at once or maybe a day a week for a while. If you can, ask to sit in on one or two lessons that aren't English - the Big Thing at the moment is all about cross-curricular links; and they'll love you at interview if you can show you understand this!

If you can't get experience in a school, look at volunteering at youth groups, Scouts, Brownies etc etc... anything that can show you have experience working with the target age range of kids.

Don't dwell on your Third Class degree - being a good teacher isn't necessarily about how well you've done (indeed, some schools of thought are that if you've struggled yourself academically, you can connect more with your struggling students!) They WILL ask you about it though, so be sure to have a snappy answer about what you've learnt from your Uni experience.

Sign up to the TDA website: http://www.tda.gov.uk/ and also cruise your Local Council website for non-teaching vacancies in schools (receptionist, teaching assistant etc)... anything to get some experience!

Good luck - teaching definitely has its ups and downs but I wouldn't have it any other way... now, to get back to planning to blow shit up as a welcome back lesson to my classes :D

Look at Portland (you can't get more bike and pubtrans friendly than us)--there's a medium-sized but robust marketing/arts industry here. Start with Pop Art: http://www.popart.com/, which has been around for about 15 years. Silicon Florist: http://siliconflorist.com is more oriented towards programmers and app designers, but it would be a good window into what companies are out here.

And I'd be happy to advise if you want more information. :)

Can you tell me where you're looking that asks for biologists? My sister is a animal biologist, and she's looking for work after completing an Americorps position.

That's right, I will take apart your electronics! And put them back together again! Better than before, even!
I fix computers and other sundry electronics, as well as perform sundry sysadmin duties. (A note: no, I cannot write CSS. Sorry. I am not a web designer, I am a sysadmin.)

~10 years experience. Certifications out the ying-yang (Apple, Cisco, Microsoft). References available. I work on any hardware out there, most OSs (Windows, OS X and earlier, most flavours of Linux and UNIX). Substantial experience in repair directly with customer over the phone (not scripted call centre, either).

I'm looking for work either in the greater Boston-Providence area or online.

Failing that, anyone need a freelance neuroscientist?

Oh, I don't even know off the top of my head. It's something I noted while looking into environmental scientist positions in Canada, and I've looked into a lot of companies. The comments by biologists just reminded me of it.

I come across the occasional position on eco.ca, which is a Canadian environmental job-board type site. In addition, there are several environmental consulting companies out there that are primarily composed of biologists.

Here's one such company, based out of BC, Alberta, and the Yukon:
http://www.edynamics.com

I'm assuming that there would be similar companies in the US. Wish I could help out more.

I have it on good authority from a dear friend working at Creative On Call that you should sign up on Hallmark's site too. There are some crappy areas of Big H, but most of them are really quite decent. I made long-term friends when I temped with them and picked up some serious skills. Besides, it's a great resume line.

You can just search, or what's better is to get yourself signed up in their system and they'll email you whenever jobs in your interest come available.

Medical Office Assistant

[identity profile] carnadosa.livejournal.com 2011-09-06 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
So my previous career plans fell through and I'm going back to school (apparently I'm both overqualified and under-qualified to answer your phones for 10 an hour with a BA and a masters. Good times. Someday I will be over that, anyway.) for a two year certified/associates in Medical Office Assistant, because in the two years I looked for work in my field, and then any work that would allow me to make a living wage, medical receptionist was always 10-50% of the admin postings on any given week.

The program I'm in is pretty structured, I have two jobs right now (and the one temp one is actually dealing with medical records) so I'm actually looking for advice from people already in the field. Completion of this program qualified me to take the AAMA. Is that a useful certification? Are there job boards or websites that specialize in this area? Are there good trade organizations or something to belong to, list-serves to watch? Are there certain skill sets that are most valuable? Basically, how do I use the next two years to position myself to get a career in this industry and not just a job?
