Alright, I'll jump in feet first...

Practically speaking, I'm looking for work as a teacher. I have an Illinois Type 03 (Elementary Education) and a Type 10 (Special Ed - Deaf and Hard of Hearing). I am eligible for an Emergency Type 10 LBS I or LBS II if I can find a principal who wants me there. I do plan to eventually go to school to get my LBS. I am also National Board Certified, so really, if something amazing came along, I could go anywhere in the country and not have to worry about certificate reciprocity.

Idealistically, I'd love to be able to support myself as an artist. I'm a photographer and do just about every kind of handcraft I've been able to get my hands on. If you're in Northern Illinois/NW Indiana and need things photographed for an Etsy or for Ebay or a blog, I'd love to start doing that kind of freelance work. You might want to post this position in Tucson, AZ; I work for a company that handles mental health clients for the state of AZ, and we had some layoffs not that long ago due to funding cuts-- there's quite a few qualified workers with *exactly* that kind of experience here in town, and being that you're only one state over you may well find some who'd be willing to move.

Figured I'd get in early (it's 3 a.m. here, but I couldn't miss the fair).

My question is less about getting a job, but more about how I go about advancing. I'm currently a postgraduate student in film, tutoring at a university in New Zealand. This is all well and good; between student loans and tutoring pay I do alright, and I'd be happy to continue tutoring for a few more years after this.
The problem is that ideally I'd like to become a lecturer in the subject. The only thing standing between me and that is a doctorate, and it's been suggested that I go overseas to undertake the doctorate. I can see several reasons why this would be the case, not least of which being that it demonstrates I'm not a one-trick pony. The problem is that I don't want to uproot in a year's time. I like living here - it's where all my stuff is, for a start.

I want to put myself in a good position to get the only job I'm really qualified for, but I'm being told that in order for that to happen, I have to do something I think I'd really dislike.
Sam's Cafe members, if you did postgrad work, was it at the same college where you were an undergraduate? If so, did it decrease your chances of a job you wanted?

The perception among search committees in the US is that it's best to go to a variety of programs rather than doing undergraduate and graduate work at the same place because it broadens your education. If you stay at the same place, then you limit yourself to the knowledge and specialties of the faculty there, but if you move on, then your education is more well-rounded because you've been exposed to more. It's also rare to be hired as a faculty member at the same place where you did your schooling, so if that's something you'd like, you'd be better off doing your graduate work somewhere else.

BTW, our training also qualifies us to work in the US, if one can get a work visa there, but maybe you have some other Canadian members with some ideas. Not really looking to move down there.

I'm a volunteer at the Bronx Zoo, so of only minimal help to you, but do you keep tabs on the job board at the AZA site? (Here, I found the link for you: http://www.aza.org/JobListings/) I think Canadian jobs occasionally show up there, along with fieldwork opportunities, though it's mainly US stuff. Sorry about that last bit, but still...it might help.

Hello! I'm a recent graduate from a liberal arts college with a BA in Performing Arts with a Concentration in Music and a Minor in Creative Writing, but I've also taken classes in Media Studies. My eventual goal is to work in media and marketing, and I've completed two internships along those lines. One of those internships was at a publishing company in Los Angeles, where I helped organize and plan their summer marketing tour and online web series, and the other took place in my college's Career Services office, where I created a social media presence and researched and implemented several projects for the Director of the office. I am currently volunteering with a local comic store to create a social media presence and reach out into the community and help raise their public profile. I'm taking a year off from school to get my feet under me and earn some money before starting grad school, but I'm eventually going to get my MA in Media Studies from the New School.

Right now, I work at my old high school job (fast food) near home just to be earning and saving money, but I'm looking for an entry level position in social media and marketing in one of the bigger cities in New York, either the city itself or upstate (Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse). FWIW, I found when I was applying to jobs in distant cities it helped to either have an address listed in the area (usually a friend) or be upfront in the cover letter, mention that you're looking to relocate and will cover costs personally. I got more interviews when I started doing that.

This is off-topic to jobs-in-Memphis, but on-topic for art. I hope you don't find a little critique untoward.

I would deeply suggest displaying your art differently. If you don't want to go through the hassle of setting up your own website, using Blogger is great, but I think it would be better to utilize the blog format: post each piece of art, tag it digital, painting/printmaking, etc, link the tags on the sidebar. All of my professors have stressed ease-of-viewing as the most important aspect of any artist website, corroborated by a the articles written by art directors that I've read.

For free gallery, as alternatives or in addition to Blogger, you can check out places like Behance; there are also free website services, like Weebly.

I do like your art quite a bit, which is why I felt the need to pipe up. Good art deserves to be displayed to its best advantage (:

I am a Mistress of the Administrative Arts (just ask Sam!) My best skills are in office work, and writing/editing, but I know that most of the Cafe have the same skills.

I bake bread LIKE A BOSS but can only do so for local pickup/delivery. But I'd be happy to come to your house and teach you to bake bread! It'll be great fun!

I can babysit your cat or dog or organize your office/closet/life. I'm shit at housework but I can give it a go. You *don't* want me babysitting your kid until ze's out of diapers, but after that I'll give it a go.

Hi! So I'm looking for any old dead-end job right now, because it has been a full year since I graduated from college and I have only just now started to figure out what I want to do career-wise. I have a B.A. in liberal arts (theatre) and I've spent the last year working mailroom/shipping. I have mad organizational skills, can wrangle up to 30 people at a time, and absolutely adore boring, repetitive tasks so long as they're not computer-based. Based in Madison, WI, but willing to go anywhere on the Twin Cities-Chicago corridor.

But, speaking of figuring out what I want to do career-wise, I have recently discovered that my childhood dream of learning ASL and working with the Deaf community is...actually something I could do for real. (*facepalm*) Any resources/advice in this field would be highly welcome. The only thing I can find in town right now is a class at the local tech school.

Good first step: I would get in touch with the Rochester School for the Deaf (http://www.rsdeaf.org/). It's in Rochester, NY, which is a great area-- and they would definitely be able to direct you towards resources for the career goals you have. Might be some stuff on their website, actually.

We are looking for kitchen staff at my restaurant. It is basically minimum wage, thankless, hard work. Don't expect much from them, and you will still be disappointed.
Still there? Dishwashers, food prep, cooks (no fancy degrees needed)wait staff. Ability to work most evenings and weekends. Mondays we are closed. We close from the sunday before christmas until mid march (after a year, you can get unemployment during that time).
If you are on unemployment now, it will help your benefits last longer. If you are on welfare/food stamps, you could work under a certain number of hours and still receive those. There is a 401k. Some small benefits you can get after a year.
They are not actively, but can be passively racist, homophobic and mysoginistic at turns. And I take great pleasure in slapping them down. There are a lot of small town red necks working there.

Hi. I am ideally seeking a job (in New York City), but I will also accept advice.

For ten years, I was a constantly-active office temp, while simultaneously working as a) a stage manager, and b) a literary manager. I have retired from stage managing, but am still an active literary manager: I run a playwriting contest (http://reverieproductions.org/guidelines.html) every year, and have done so for 9 years.

In nearly all those ten years, I was working in finance, almost all of it at one corporation (my temp agency just kept on sending me back there). However, I have also worked here and there in a) academia and b) publishing.

In addition, prior TO that, I worked for 3-4 years in a television production company, where I was the one single assistant backing up the 3 officers. I was also production assistant, research assistant for new program ideas, sales assistant for our storefront (people bought tapes of the show), associate editor for our web site, and I was even the script doctor for a couple episodes (even though I probably shouldn't talk too much about that). So I also have media experience, even though it's from 10 years ago.

I would like a permanent administrative job that is in a field that is NOT banking. I can proofread, copyedit, I have a strong writing background, and I can do lots of non-writing admin things like filing, expense reports, calendar mainentance, travel booking, and screening calls.

My phone voice is stage-trained.

I can research like a mofo.

Ideally I'd like to work in media, publishing, or academia, but really could check out anything that isn't banking.

As for the advice; the problem I think I've been having is that lots of people don't call me back because:

a) they see that I temped for ten years, and just don't give me the chance to explain "no, but that was because I was a stage manager and needed the flexibility, and I actually turned down some offers in that time," or

b) they only call me about banking and finance because that's where I've been all this time.

As best as I can guess from not actually seeing your resume, I think your issue might stem from your presentation of yourself. I work for the career services office at a program that sees a lot of 30-40 year old students with a lot of non traditional work experience (temp positions, self employment, working 2-4 jobs at once) and a common mistake that gets made is trying to show too much of your work experience and/or using a traditional resume format that doesn't fit your experience.

You may want to cut out some of your background in stage management as many employers (unfortunately!) tend to view those with experience in the visual and performing arts as looking for a filler between their "true" interests.

You mentioned that you have approximately 10 years of temporary experience that is mostly with the same company: You may want to consider modifying your resume slightly so that you're only listing the experience with that particular company.

Example:
2000-2010 XYZ Company
- Various Positions included blah, blah, blah

Or:
2009-2010 XYZ Company
Position Most Recent

2007-2008 XYZ Company
Position Next Most Recent

(etc)

You may also want to list your stage management and literary management experience as one block as well to give your resume the appearance of more continuity:

- (selection of most prominent or longest running shows)


The other issue I can think of is that you may not be emphasizing your transferable skills enough, which could be why positions that are not banking/finance are not offering interviews. You may want to consider adding a separate section to your resume where you can list non banking skills. You may also want to tailor the responsibilities / job tasks to slightly more generic skills that include your filing, expense reports, calendars, phones, etc.

Last thought: with your banking/finance background, have you considered looking for work in an accounts payable/receivable capacity? What about as an administrator for an accountant? That might be related enough that your banking background gives you an advantage!

I'm a graphic designer (print and identity, with some experience in packaging and web. Plus marketing and intern wrangling and a bunch of other non-design skills) with a BA in design and ~four years of experience - one year of freelance and approaching three in-house (as the sole creative) at a mid-sized retail company. My three year anniversary with said company is in December and I'd like to celebrate by quitting and leaving Texas. I've got my hopes pinned on Chicago but I'll consider any decent sized city with a good public transit system. One that isn't 100+ degrees three months out of the year.

I'm looking specifically for a full-time in-house job at a company or non-profit, but contract work or something at a design/creative firm would also be amazing.

Dental Lab Tech

I have nearly completed my degree as a Dental Lab Technician (will be sitting the RG exam this spring), and would dearly love a position in either a lab or a dentist's office, where I can continue my training in a hands-on environment.

I am in the top 3 students in my year, and have a strong grasp on occlusion, anatomy and tooth morphology. As far as labwork goes, I have demonstrated initial proficiency in orthodontic wirebending, RPD design, and crown and bridge. Currently studying porcelain, so that is an area of weakness at the moment. I am also passable at denture work, but have not yet been exposed to pourable acrylic techniques (which I would love to try out). As I have not yet chosen a specialization (though I'm leaning toward ortho work), I would be open to any available lab positions.

Currently living in Richmond, Virginia, and I have a school-age daughter (as well as my own classes to consider), so unfortunately my relocation options are not good right now. But if there are any opportunities within a reasonable distance, I would love to hear about it!

I'm currently working as an adjunct at a community college, teaching in the Developmental Ed department. I teach basic reading and writing skills, mostly to adult students returning to college after years in the workforce. It's incredibly rewarding work and I enjoy it, but I would really like to have the stability of a full-time position (and so would my landlord!).

I have an MA in English with a focus on American Literature, and my thesis focused on narrative in graphic novels. I have experience teaching composition courses (Comp 101/102) to traditional students as well. I'm open to moving anywhere in the US, so any leads are appreciated!

Do you have access to the annual MLA job list for academic positions in language and literature? It should open around September 15. There's also the academic job Wiki. I can't get you a link from this smartphone screen, but google "english Wiki 2012" and there should be some sort of page for rhet/comp jobs and another for your subfield. I imagine with your training and degree you'll have better luck

A few months ago, one of our library patrons who had been coming into the library regularly for over two years to use our job search computers got two part-time jobs, one of which included housing.

I know it's just one anecdote, but he'd been in utter despair.

Hi! I'm trying to decide right now if I want to go back to school or not to get my MT/CLS certification. I graduated in 2009 with a Bachelors in Biology, and I've spent the past two years volunteering with AmeriCorps.

For a long time I wasn't sure what I wanted to do, career-wise: back in school I was leaning towards becoming a research scientist, and I have about a year's worth of lab tech experience. When I was in AmeriCorps I was thinking about working for a non-profit that interested me instead, but gradually decided I wanted something with more stability. Eventually as I was researching different job descriptions, the MT/CLS career jumped out at me as something that fit my personality, past experience, and preferred work style really well, and I've started thinking seriously about becoming one.

So! Are there any people currently in the MT/CLS field who can tell me a bit about what their daily work is like? Where/in what program did you study to become certified? What do you like/dislike about your job?

I just graduated from college in May and I've been unemployed since. I'm looking for office work, preferably in Kansas City, MO, but at this point I'll take anything in the greater metro area.

I have 6 years experience as a student worker at my college library in the interlibrary loan department and I worked with the public in the circulation department.

I also worked as a researcher on a special project for my college endowment association.

This company is located in Chicago/Naperville, San Mateo, DC, and NYC. The company focuses on research and evaluation, concentrating (but not limited to) health and education. There is also a (small!) international division. The company is a non-profit, offers a leave for adopters, and a rewarding place to work. Different positions require different levels of travel. Some jobs require a Masters; others a PhD.

I like working with this company, because even I'm not making a difference everyday, I know the company is. Plus, since we handle so many different projects at once, I get to work in areas I really care about.

I would like to relocate to Chicago, and I am looking for jobs there-- basically anything with 'research,' 'writer,' or 'editor' in the job description.

I have a Master's in linguistics, various random office-y skills, and 4+ years of experience as a (senior) research assistant at a university research center. My experience includes:

--tech writing, including software documentation, lots of reports pitched to various audiences, and co-authorship of an Urdu grammar
--all kinds of editing, including copy-editing and indexing grammars of languages I don't speak and putting out a quarterly newletter
--research and research support, including interview-based software usability studies, various lexicography projects, and literature reviews on all sorts of topics
--using ArcGIS cartography software to display and analyze all sorts of linguistic data
--writing, maintaining, and enforcing IRB protocols for a variety of human-subjects research projects
--teaching undergrads, which I never want to do again as a whole, but I do have and can use the whole suite of skills that developed-- course design, lecturing, and assessment

...and a slew of other things.

Also, I read a bunch of dead languages pretty well and German and Icelandic passably; though I don't read them, I've been supporting lexicography projects in Arabic and a bunch of modern Indic languages for several years, and I can copy-edit languages I don't read; I've got undergrad-level classics, anthropology, and medieval studies; I've done archaeological field school; and I read music and play piano and a couple other instruments.

I'm looking for any job where those qualifications would be a good fit-- university admin (possibly in a Human Subjects/IRB department), academic/educational publishing, museums or arts organizations, tech writing/editing or research positions in any field-- really anyone in Chicago who would hire me.

Full-time work is preferred; however, my department is being outsourced in mid-October, so as the time draws nearer I'd be willing to consider part-time position. I'm specifically looking for admin, communications, or editorial/publishing work (this includes freelance proofreading or copy-editing jobs) - I'd love to get into publishing or do something with a creative bent to it, but this is an ideal, not a requirement. I have a BA in linguistics with a minor in English; I'm detail-oriented, organized, and analytical. I'm a great communicator. I'm currently in customer service (phones and e-mail coverage), so I've got the phone voice and the people skills for any kind of administrative assistant or receptionist position. I have past admin and extensive proofreading experience. I find mistakes that our Communications Department missed...usually after the material went to print.

I'm a quick learner and hard worker: I may not know a certain program or job function, but it'll be worth your time if you're willing to teach me, because I'll pick it up fast. I'd be happy to provide a resume to anyone who's interested.
