It's hot here. Hot as fuck. Hotter than fuck. Fuck can only dream of being this hot. Mum sent me an email saying that she saw a news report about the possibility of rain in Chicago, but I think the rain decided Chicago was too hot and detoured.

There is no breeze, there is no shade, there is no God.

But then I think about the fact that this heat will end by no later than September, while it is a year-round function in Austin, and I'm okay. When I moved to Chicago I noticed that the primary topic of small talk here was the weather, which makes sense in retrospect. There's no point in talking about the weather in Austin (hot) or Oregon (wet) or California (mild) because it's always the same, but here the weather is a neverending variable.

They say the motto of Chicago is "Urbs In Horto" which means "City in a garden" but I suspect the real motto is Et Hoc Transibit: THIS TOO SHALL PASS.

It might be Adfatimne calidus est prote, "Hot enough for you?"

Appropriately, [livejournal.com profile] jenna_thorn has tips on how to stay safe and stay cool.

Oh, GREAT.

I'm on my way out the door to run a 5K.

At least it rained yesterday.

About 45 minutes before the race, a wall of cool air hit us. It was quite possibly the best I've felt all week.

It rained just as we started off for the race, and just as I was finishing. Afterwards, the mugginess made me feel like I had a layer of slime on me, but at least it's cooler.

[identity profile] condwiramurs.livejournal.com 2010-07-07 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
It is hotter than a blast furnace in the depths of Hell in New Haven. I'm putting out a hit on whoever up on Olympus is responsible for this heat.

Same goes for NJ. And PA, which is where I'm heading next. I can't friggin' believe I came back from a trip to Israel and Barcelona only to find that it's hotter in the States.

1. I'm in Oregon and it's 97 bloody degrees out, no cloud in the sky. god only knows how hellish it is in eastern Oregon which is essentially high grassland/desert.
Oregon's weather is probably not as crazy as Chicago's but it's crazy enough...crazy....enough....

2. Thankfully in Portland we have a coffee shop every two and a half feet. That's where I'm hiding now.

3. HAHAHA...I need to come up with a Latin motto for Portland.

[identity profile] copperbadge.livejournal.com 2010-07-07 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, "Crazy enough" would be Adfatim Delirus Est ("It is sufficiently crazy").

God definitely died. There just was a thunderstorm dedicated to it, but tomorrow will be hot and dangerous as well :/

I'm about an hour away from Chicago and it's getting dark and I hear thunder. Maybe it'll get to the city soon.

...this heat will end by no later than September, while it is a year-round function in Austin...

Warmth is a reason I'm ecstatic to be moving to Austin. (Oh, hai, I'm moving to Austin!)

After growing up in NYC, going to Uni in Rochester, NY, and living back in NYC since, moving to a place where I don't really need to worry about coats is really exciting.

I'll take care of the warms. You can have the colds. (Temperature, not like, rhino virus. That's just not nice.)

Hi newcomer to Austin! Enjoy the warmth - while yes it is hot, it is great that it is never cold enough to freeze your nosehairs!!!

[identity profile] copperbadge.livejournal.com 2010-07-08 02:08 pm (UTC)(link)
To be honest, Urbs in Horto's pretty apt -- Chicago has a LOT of green space, a lot of parks, especially tiny unexpected ones in local neighborhoods. We are definitely a city in a garden :D It's just a VERY HOT GARDEN right now.

[identity profile] daizy2k2.livejournal.com 2010-07-07 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Funnily enough, it's only about 85 in my corner of Texas (College Station), mainly due to approaching storms from the Gulf. However, I could do without the 70% humidity.

Gloat gloat gloat

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2010-07-07 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
It is 73 in beautiful downtown Burbank ... we've had such a marine layer this year, I tell you. I am currently wearing a sweater because someone neglected to inform the building managers that 73 is room temperature and we do not, in fact, need the air conditioning to be on.

On the other hand it hasn't rained in months and I can't remember the last thunderstorm we had. I don't think we've had a proper thunderstorm since I moved here.

Someone should make a Chicago daily weather graph that goes from 'hot as fuck' to 'cold as cold ass balls.' I don't know what any of the temperatures in between would be, but ... it would be funny. Then they could give it to people who've just moved to the city. "Welcome to Chicago! This is what you can look forward to!"

Re: Gloat gloat gloat

[identity profile] condwiramurs.livejournal.com 2010-07-07 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think Chicago does in-between. It didn't last time I lived there.

At the least the graph would be simple to read, heh.

[identity profile] metallumai.livejournal.com 2010-07-07 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually God is probably OK; after all, there is air conditioning. Unless that's just people fighting back. We too have the nasty hot. About an hour ago there were maybe 17 drops of rain, to taunt us.

[identity profile] copperbadge.livejournal.com 2010-07-08 02:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Air conditioning does feel like a gift from God, I will say that....

The entire northern hemisphere is melting! Everyone around this side of the globe in my flist is complaining.
Here it's 35ºC, also. *gets cooked*

[identity profile] a-mae-zing.livejournal.com 2010-07-07 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I hear you. It's been sticky-hot here, especially on the one day I had to leave the house/wonderful world of air conditioning and run around town in a car with no AC. D:

[identity profile] bare-bear.livejournal.com 2010-07-07 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I think plate tectonics shifted us around when no one was looking, because I think it's moved southern Ontario to places usually reserved for tropical forests. I'm from the prairies, we don't do humidity.

*dies in a sweaty puddle of melted human*

And the topic of weather is nearly the national conversation in Canada. ;)

So a couple of years ago I moved from Michigan to New Hampshire and everyone in New Hampshire told me things like "if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes". I guess they think they're being all witty, so they're not amused when I point out that people in the Midwest say exactly the same thing. Heh.

It's hard for me to imagine places where the weather is pretty much the same all the time.

[identity profile] bare-bear.livejournal.com 2010-07-07 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
In the prairies, or at least in Manitoba Canada, we can see the weather systems coming days away. Ah, the joys in living in where 1/3 of the country is flat flat flat. :D

It's been a weird day for DC. Not only is it hot as fuck, but there was an oil and grease spill from some vehicle in the heart of the city this morning, and a water main break prompting a 100-foot geyser of water this afternoon in the suburbs.

I mean, c'mon.

[identity profile] in-a-tizzy.livejournal.com 2010-07-08 12:15 am (UTC)(link)

I lived in West Texas for four years and now live in South Carolina. I find it hysterical that we haven't had rain in two weeks and they're already crying drought. Really? You people don't know drought!

I just LOLed and LOLed at that. I think our TEN YEAR drought (Australia) broke what, last year? Maybe the year before.

South Carolina is funny.

It has been 33C (93F) with humidity factored in it's 44C (110F) for the past 3 days. I feel like my brain is melting out my ears!! It's not even cool in morning. Factor in the 6 buses I take each day to get to and from work, plus it seems that all the major roads have construction work going on and I'm ready to snap and hide in my basement until October.

the fact that you translated "hot enough for you" into Latin. I can't brain.

It's raining here. Maybe if I drive down, the rain will follow.
If I did, would you have coffee with me? XD

Also, this reminds me of an OCRemix track from Final Fantasy 8 called Rain in Chicago, based on the overworld theme.

We are having the same weather here in southern Ontario. Twice in the last three days I've had outdoor meetings that I had to walk to get to, where "walk" is more accurately "ooze," "slither," or "slouch."

Also, my town is turning into The City that Pants Forgot. Bathing suits everywhere.

The heat seems to have inspired this weird solidarity in those of us who venture outside, though. I've had more smiles from strangers I pass on the street in the last three days than in the previous three weeks.

It was 101 here today, and my mother agrees with "the breeze, shade, god," phrase.
