It's hot here. Hot as fuck. Hotter than fuck. Fuck can only dream of being this hot. Mum sent me an email saying that she saw a news report about the possibility of rain in Chicago, but I think the rain decided Chicago was too hot and detoured.

There is no breeze, there is no shade, there is no God.

But then I think about the fact that this heat will end by no later than September, while it is a year-round function in Austin, and I'm okay. When I moved to Chicago I noticed that the primary topic of small talk here was the weather, which makes sense in retrospect. There's no point in talking about the weather in Austin (hot) or Oregon (wet) or California (mild) because it's always the same, but here the weather is a neverending variable.

They say the motto of Chicago is "Urbs In Horto" which means "City in a garden" but I suspect the real motto is Et Hoc Transibit: THIS TOO SHALL PASS.

It might be Adfatimne calidus est prote, "Hot enough for you?"

Appropriately, [livejournal.com profile] jenna_thorn has tips on how to stay safe and stay cool.

About 45 minutes before the race, a wall of cool air hit us. It was quite possibly the best I've felt all week.

It rained just as we started off for the race, and just as I was finishing. Afterwards, the mugginess made me feel like I had a layer of slime on me, but at least it's cooler.

Same goes for NJ. And PA, which is where I'm heading next. I can't friggin' believe I came back from a trip to Israel and Barcelona only to find that it's hotter in the States.

1. I'm in Oregon and it's 97 bloody degrees out, no cloud in the sky. god only knows how hellish it is in eastern Oregon which is essentially high grassland/desert.
Oregon's weather is probably not as crazy as Chicago's but it's crazy enough...crazy....enough....

2. Thankfully in Portland we have a coffee shop every two and a half feet. That's where I'm hiding now.

3. HAHAHA...I need to come up with a Latin motto for Portland.

Warmth is a reason I'm ecstatic to be moving to Austin. (Oh, hai, I'm moving to Austin!)

After growing up in NYC, going to Uni in Rochester, NY, and living back in NYC since, moving to a place where I don't really need to worry about coats is really exciting.

I'll take care of the warms. You can have the colds. (Temperature, not like, rhino virus. That's just not nice.)

It is 73 in beautiful downtown Burbank ... we've had such a marine layer this year, I tell you. I am currently wearing a sweater because someone neglected to inform the building managers that 73 is room temperature and we do not, in fact, need the air conditioning to be on.

On the other hand it hasn't rained in months and I can't remember the last thunderstorm we had. I don't think we've had a proper thunderstorm since I moved here.

Someone should make a Chicago daily weather graph that goes from 'hot as fuck' to 'cold as cold ass balls.' I don't know what any of the temperatures in between would be, but ... it would be funny. Then they could give it to people who've just moved to the city. "Welcome to Chicago! This is what you can look forward to!"

So a couple of years ago I moved from Michigan to New Hampshire and everyone in New Hampshire told me things like "if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes". I guess they think they're being all witty, so they're not amused when I point out that people in the Midwest say exactly the same thing. Heh.

It's hard for me to imagine places where the weather is pretty much the same all the time.

We are having the same weather here in southern Ontario. Twice in the last three days I've had outdoor meetings that I had to walk to get to, where "walk" is more accurately "ooze," "slither," or "slouch."

Also, my town is turning into The City that Pants Forgot. Bathing suits everywhere.

The heat seems to have inspired this weird solidarity in those of us who venture outside, though. I've had more smiles from strangers I pass on the street in the last three days than in the previous three weeks.
