I'm sure part of why I dislike the books so much is because I read them for the first time in college. I bet I would have loved them as a kid, and then maybe been able to forgive what are now (to me) unforgivable issues with characterization and writing style and so on. I mean, that's why I still love Tamora Pierce's books, for all their flaws.
