I think scenes that are basically present to serve a purpose can be dreadful and boring, but if you have the skills they can also be engaging, and can be a break from the heavier stuff sometimes too. My usual MO is to start at the beginning and go on through to the end, but sometimes I have a scene I just HAVE to write, and I'll skip ahead to do that and the high of getting it right usually carries me through a few scenes I'm not that enthused about :)
