That distinction is really intriguing. It's interesting how different people have such different ways of approaching it - it's such a case of whatever works for you, isn't it? - because creative work depends so much on the individual.
I am a writer and I have a life outside writing because really, who wants to live at the office? ;) But the reason I define myself as a writer is mostly because it makes me write and it reminds me that writing is a job and therefore to accept comment/criticism on a professional level. I think that's the same effect as you're talking about but the exact opposite action.
