See, it's so interesting -- that remark of Le Guin's about road signs is one of the ones I was thinking of when I talked about cutting and condescending. It utterly irked me, since it's not in any way helpful and seems designed to obfuscate. (The other really horrible one is the sarcastic story about the Idea Tree, but I can't remember who said that.) The Thought Experiments quote I hadn't encountered, and it sound marginally more helpful, at least.
