I don't think it's silly to want to archive fic, BUT not everyone is as lenient as I am about where their stories go. If you're archiving something that either is available now or you plan to make available to the public when it's done, you definitely want to ask the author first. They may not want you hosting it as long as they have the original already hosted somewhere. :)
