Jan. 12th, 2004 11:01 amGod, Fandom is weird.
I've been reading over some of the drama going on in the fandom lately, from people being Outed to people being Deathmatched (I hear I lost, to a loud chorus of who-the-hell-is-that-guy?) to this latest LJ which apparently is devoted to nothing but the discussion of Why We Love/Hate People In Fandom.
I have no official opinion on any of it, really*, as I don't honestly consider myself much part of Fandom As A World -- I don't read much fanfic, and I write to satisfy myself and occasionally if someone else requests and/or obviously deserves something. I don't really understand the concept of Journalfen, and I doubt I could ever separate my LJ into Fandom and Real Life as I can barely manage to organise one journal, let alone two.
---
* Having examined Deathmatch's pairings, I do believe the publicity is skewed a bit, as [info]ladyjaida has done significantly more in fandom than Be Cassie Claire's Friend, but whatever, it's their gig.
---
Besides, I haven't heard any complaints yet about my RL ramblings or my Fic Insertions. I rarely ever use friendslock; I think in the past two months I've made perhaps four friendslocked posts, and most of those were because I simply didn't want to bother the whole list with something.
I do keep to what has been amusedly dubbed "The Bubble" of not revealing my school (the u.arizona website belongs to a friend who kindly hosts me), city, state, address, or surname, which is wise if one writes Fanfic With Sex as it tends to freak out employers; still, the original reason was more that I'm a paranoid bastard due to Stalker Trauma. Sooner or later I'm sure a student or colleague will ask me if I'm Sam "Copperbadge" Starbuck, but we'll hide that body when we come to it.
There's no real point to this post, I suppose, other than to say, wow, what a weird wild world we live in, and here's my place in it.
