Jan. 23rd, 2004 09:05 amMe: Mum, I don't understand why Iowa and New Hampshire are important.
Mum: I'm sure lots of our corn comes from Iowa. I don't get New Hampshire either.
Me: I mean politically.
Mum: Oh, well, their caucauses come first.
Me: And?
Mum: And I guess that means the Democrats of the rest of the country look to them as a guide.
Me: But...so it has no legal, governmental implications?
Mum: Not really.
Me: So why the hell would anyone in California care what someone in Iowa thinks?
Mum: Do you really think anyone in California is paying attention in the first place?
Me: So really there's no reason to pay attention to Iowa and New Hampsire.
Mum: Nope. Did you see the piece they did on how people vote in Iowa? They have potlucks, and whoever shows up to the potluck in that person's home goes and stands in the corner of the room that's named after the person they want to vote for.
Me: THE FUCK?
Mum: I think if the news got too widespread, Californians would actively not care what Iowans thought.
