Apr. 5th, 2006

I'm tempted to start some kind of blog where I'm actually writing from sometime in the future, and keeping a daily journal as if I lived in, say, 2050. Average lifespans being what they are and taking into account my family's in particular, I expect I won't live much past that. I think it would be interesting to write an ongoing futureblog from a time after my death, incorporating speculation on politics, religion, science, and technology.

And then I look at the two novels I'm working on, LC, Nothing Constant, and my daily email volume as it is, and I think, at this point given how behind I am in email I'm actually writing from two weeks in the PAST.

Ahahaha. Help stop me from writing this plz.
Yep -- I downloaded and watched last night, and so now it's time for Sam's Three Things About House.

I have to say, there were so many good things to talk about in this episode and almost none of them were plot related. I'm not sure what to make of this. It could just be my inherent dislike of Michelle Trachtenberg talking. It could also be a halmark of House MD, which is that the plot is more or less irrelevant and we watch it for the characters. The character arcs do just keep getting better.

1. I must have rewound and watched that cane-fall at the end five or six times. There's an art to stunt tumbling, and there are things you can watch for to see whether someone's just falling and covering pain or stage-falling. Hugh Laurie is a master at stage falling. That cane-fall is a thing of beauty both technically and from Wilson's point of view.

2. That having been said, the whole being-really-offensive-to-Wilson thing did not come off as well as the writers hoped, I think. House always has a motivation for what he does, and generally the meaner he gets the better his motivation is. I can understand that he's trying to break Wilson out of his unhappiness and kick him into divorce-gear, but I don't think that's enough to warrant everything that was going on. While being mean to each other as a bonding method is indeed very twelve-year-old-boy, I didn't buy it as honest, the way I did the "House, this is God" convo. It didn't read true, and I think the writers know it, or they'd have arc'd it out over several episodes like the Cameron thing was.

3. SPEAKING OF WHICH. Generally, when slang appears on television that is a sign that it has died in actual usage and is no longer cool, but I declare an exception for "Oh Snap" because that? WAS BRILLIANCE. Transcript:

Cameron: He loves her. He did everything he could to keep her safe.
House: What does that mean?
Cameron: Love is an emotion certain people experience, similar to happiness. No, maybe I should give a more relate-able example.
House: OH SNAP.

I love the new Cameron arc, because while it's basically possible to ship any two people on this show (Cuddy is exempt for reasons of "I hate her"; also, stupid name) House/Cameron is one of my favourites. And it's getting easier now that Cameron is getting easier to like.

3a. "Oh -- that's dandruff." Brilliance.

I'm sorry, normally I keep it to three plus a, but I have to add

3b. While it seems like Chase got short shrift this episode, I love that Foreman NEVER GETS TO TELL his little parable. Also the whiteboard scene:

Foreman: I say we assume House is right about the anaphlaxis --
House: It is tempting!
Foreman: [taking the whiteboard marker and starting to write] -- heart failure could be either infection, coronary disease, or rejection...
House: [interrupting and taking the marker back] Sorry. There's a reason they call it the whiteboard. S'not my rule. What ties both these conditions together?
[long silence]
Foreman: Okay. We can all stare at each other or we can investigate what caused the heart failure. Just the heart failure. You wanna give me that black marker?
Commentary post-hack: I do not guarantee any of these links are still active.

I got my inbox from 72 to 16 emails between seven am and now. And some of those were threaded comment notifications, meaning 20-40 notifications per "email". I'd say I'm the communications king, but everyone would just LAUGH AT ME.

There will be some downloads and stuff posted later today, also links to fanart for LC (from three separate sources, this is how much I suck, they've piled up that much). This post is sort of a mental clearingplace, which is why I will now downshift suddenly and without warning:

I have come to the realisation that I read comic books, basically, like novels with scenery. What I mean is that it's nice that the images are there and all, but I read the text and then look at the images for cues. I think this is probably pretty weird. It's not that I don't appreciate comic book art; it's just I don't think about it while I'm reading.

This message brought to you by The Family Man, which I'm sure I would love if there were something, anything, to tell me what the hell was going on. I love Dylan Meconis' art and would happily buy her a drink because her storyline and dialogue are both great, but I just can't get into The Family Man, because I can't bloodywell figure it out. This, it should be noted, is not a crit of her work, but rather an admission of my own flaws. You should check it out, anyway.

Downshift #2:

I keep threatening to post my "dailies" bookmark folder, and now I'm finally getting to it:

Yes, I am this organised. STFU.

  • Daily:
    • Bunny: The quintessential webcomic. Obscure, bizarre, and so great.

    • Ozy and Millie: Smartass foxes wearing no trousers! Dragons! Zen Buddhism!

    • Able and Baker: A self absorbed woman, a scholarly sheep, and their life coach.

    • Frazz: Frazz has been described as what happened to Calvin and Hobbes when Calvin grew up. Beware of popups.

    • Poetry Daily: This swings pendulously between really great and wonderfully bad. Never boring.

    • The Smoking Gun Archive: I have a sekrit passion for celebrity "riders".

    • I Am Bored: This updates once daily with the distilled essence of the uselessness of the web.

    • inflash.com: I'm a flash game addict.

    • The World according to Livejournal: I love this, and they keep adding features.

  • Monday

    • Netflix New Releases: What shall I scoff at this week? (must be a Netflix member to view, so no link)

    • Penny Arcade!: I don't play video games, so I miss about half of every strip, but I always get the punchline.

    • Shortpacked: I've been reading this since its beginning. Today's is particularly good.

  • Tuesday

    • Cat and Girl: It's like if Bunny read more Nietzsche.

    • Dogs In Duds: Because who doesn't love dogs wearing clothing?

    • GoodArt Gallery: Doesn't update very often, but I feel like I get an assload of culture when it does.

    • Patches: This is what living inside of Nny's head must be like.

  • Wednesday

  • Thursday

  • Friday

  • Saturday

  • Sunday
    • PostSecret: I deeply envy the guy who invented this, because I think it must be fascinating.

I cordially invite you, if you have a list of websites you visit on a daily/weekly basis, to export it and share it in comments for the edification and enjoyment of all. This is especially fun because (DOWNSHIFT):

Sometimes only anime faces can express my true feelings. O.O. Check out #90.
I am seized with the sudden urge to write Lupin/House, as well.

There's something deeply wrong with me.
