Jul. 4th, 2006 04:48 pmI'm not sure why she's compelled to do this, but Mum likes to make life as hard as possible for herself by 1. insisting that everyone who comes to our house is judging her based on its cleanliness, 2. insisting that it's not really a holiday unless we have Decorated Properly up to and including tablecloths and 3. insisting that we must cook "special recipes" for holidays.
Now, I'm all for special recipes and trying new things, but I'm for doing it at times when there isn't a pre-existing social pressure to Make The Day Perfect. It's a lot easier to say "Wow, that was gross" on Tuesday than it is on say, Independence Day. And granted, some of the Special Recipes we have tried on holidays have come out awesome -- herb roasted turkey breast and stuffing "muffins" are a staple in our house after The Tastiest Thanksgiving Ever -- but I'm really, truly, and deeply skeptical that "coffee rubbed" steaks are going to taste at all good in any way. Coffee grounds, within my sphere of experience, are the things you throw out after pouring hot water through them. They are not to be mixed with salt and brown sugar and rubbed on steak.
But we're doing up hot dogs, too, so I reckon I can slip some Coffee Grounds Steak to Dog under the table and just eat all the hot dogs. In the meantime, we watched Pirates of the Caribbean (in preparation for next week's sequel premier) and I read some Letters of Benjamin Franklin and now the Italy-Germany game is on. Soon we're going to whip up some cannolis. It's a veritable festival of the melting pot!
Hey, so Rainette, what're you going to do if it's France and Germany for the cup this year? I suppose you just cheer whenever anyone scores and swear at the winners in the opposite language?
