Oct. 3rd, 2006 03:19 pmWell, it's been an interesting time of it. I'm stuck here today at home, waiting for UPS to deliver the rest of my material possessions, so I likely won't be posting this until the afternoon.
When mum left yesterday I did unpack some things, but very slowly and with great deliberation. It's one of those times when you work to distract yourself, and I didn't want to do anything stupid simply because I was in need of distraction. Eventually I gave up and went out, and when I came back I decided it was time to assemble the futon. Good thing too, because I'm not sure I could do it today. I'm not sure how I managed the futon last night. My dresser is sitting in front of me mockingly, waiting to be assembled, but I just haven't the energy yet.
Assembling the futon wasn't hard, it was mostly a matter of getting enough leverage on the bolts, but it did take some time and a bit of blood when I installed the hinges that allow it to fold out into a bed. The cut must have been deep since I bled like a stuck pig, but fortunately I have neosporin and bandaids so this morning I'm all bandaged up and infection-free. :D I don't have any sheets yet so I slept on a stolen Amtrak blanket (SHHHH) and used the duvet mum bought me as a cover. It's pretty nice, but I'm not sure how useful it will be in the winter, as it's also quite thin. I've taken pictures of the new place now that it looks halfway decent, and I'll post those when I can. My bookshelf has everything but books on it at the moment, and I still have to assemble my dresser, but I'm taking it slow. The rest of the week is for unpacking and resting, then on Friday I'll scattergun all the temp agencies and set up Monday appointments.
I had asked Mum to call once she got on the plane last night, but she called me at 7:30pm, the time her plane was supposed to depart, with bad news: thunder, hail, and rain had shut down O'Hare completely. Nobody was going anywhere. I suggested she might take the shuttle back to the hotel we were staying in, but she decided to wait it out. Lucky called me around 9:30 to let me know that she was supposed to be getting on an airplane soon. I've talked to her since, but I'm still not sure what-all happened; I got the futon finished by eight or so but I was up till midnight and there were no more calls. This morning I got up, had a shower, and phoned mum around eight am.
"I'm not doing too well at the moment," she said. "I just walked in the door."
As it turned out, she sat on the plane, waiting, for nearly four hours. When they finally took off she didn't get into San Antonio (cheaper to fly out of SA than Austin) until four am. She couldn't get a shuttle to where her car was parked in a distant lot until five, and that meant that she hit rush-hour traffic coming into Austin. In Austin, rush-hour starts at six-thirty and goes until ten. So, I was fretting this morning but I've just called and Lucky stayed home to look after her today, so she's been alternately working-from-home and napping.
Peapod, a home-delivery grocery service, has showed up to drop off my food, which is pretty awesome. It sure doesn't seem like sixty dollars' worth of grub, but I bought rum and a swiffer and cheese, so that always runs it high. I also bought celery, something I forgot to get at the supermarket, which means that once I debone those chicken breasts and make a stock, I'll have everything necessary to make Orgasmic Peanut Butter Soup. Also, dude, the brie I bought (a brand I'd never had before, but it was on sale) comes in a tin, like spam. I AM HIGHLY SKEPTICAL. *eyeballs it suspiciously*
It's really nice to be living where the weather is halfway reasonable again. Granted, no airplane was ever grounded because of excessive heat, but this morning I had my windows open and the overhead fan turning lazily and it's wonderful.
And now that UPS has brought my linens, flatware, clothing, and saucepan, I'm be all set. Of course, instead of unpacking any of that I'm here, online, but you can only do so much unpacking per day.
Man, you guys have got to see this "orange blossom" muffin I'm eating. You don't get colours like that in nature. I feel a Friday Photo Update coming on....
