Oct. 2nd, 2008 08:05 pmMy email address has been reset and a new password issued. Please feel free to re-friend
copperbadge and/or defriend
sam_storyteller depending on your whim. If you've always wanted to defriend me, here's your chance! :D
Anyway. Big round of appreciative applause for Annika from the support team, who sent me an email with everything I needed to know about the hack. I'm reprinting it here:
Thank you for your report, and I apologize for the delay in being able to investigate this situation and provide you with a response. We have been able to confirm that your account was compromised by someone else, but have unfortunately not found enough evidence to match a specific individual to the break-in.
The hijacker gained access to your account through its original email address, which was a Hotmail address -- they have subsequently deleted all the other email addresses for the account, which is why you were not able to resecure the account with your Gmail address (if you attempted to do so).
Unfortunately, as you know the hijacker deleted all of the entries from your it appears that the hijacker deleted all of the entries from your journal and the communities you mentioned. LiveJournal does not have the ability to restore deleted entries, as the act of deletion permanently removes the entry from our servers. I apologize for not being able to assist you further than just giving you control of the account again.
I am, needless to say, gutted at losing five years of
copperbadge.
I have been through wayback machine and google cache and have amassed quite a lot of posts, some of them important posts, so there is that. If you have saved anything posted to the journal or printed anything out, I'd like to ask that you see if you can find it. Please don't send it to me yet; I'm trying to assemble what I have, first. It's likely that in the next few days I will open a comm so people can supply old posts if they wish. In particular if anyone has the "what I learned from a broken wrist" post, I really really really really liked that one. And also the End of Dead Year post. And the Goodbye Boston post, though I suspect that one is gone forever.
Jack and Ellis, i_defeated_sga, and stealing_harry were emptied. Jack and Ellis I have all the chapters of, so the only thing lost there is the art posts, and I'm fairly sure I have all the art in my files so I can repost it. stealing_harry had been closed for more than a year and was betacommentary to begin with, so the loss is not great. I'm not actually positive I have all the stories from i_defeated_sga but I'll be looking through my files for them this weekend.
Time for damage control, I guess. Thanks for helping me out, guys. You've sent links and given advice and helped me sort through this. I love my cafe, even when we're taking temporary shelter in the bookstore next door. :D
