Nov. 15th, 2008 02:48 pmMum went on the el for the first time today. That was fun! It was a short ride, just Grand to Lake (one stop) but she can't walk a whole lot because of her knee. We went down to The Retail Outlet Formerly Known as Marshall Fields, where we shopped around and mum took thousands of photographs of the decorations and kept trying to buy me a hat. I rather like Macy's for Christmas shopping, because it's a department store but a classier department store than, say, Sears. I know people are all kinds of infuriated that Macy's killed Marshall Fields and ate its liver, but I moved to Chicago at the same time Macy's did, so I unfortunately never got to experience what came before.
ANYWAY, then we caught the 29 bus to Michigan and Illinois. We wanted to see the Rand McNally store, but GUESS WHAT CLOSED without notifying googlemaps? YES, RAND MCNALLY.
So we decided to eat lunch instead of looking at maps. I thought mum might like Grand Lux, but there were bazillions of people and an hour-long wait. It was obscene. So we went across the street to Lawry's, which was completely empty and oh my sweet god delicious. Someone recommended Lawry's to me at some point, and you are awesome and 100% right about it. It's got to be downtown's best kept secret because it's an elegant dining room with low noise and delicious sandwiches and potato chips to die for, and nobody was there despite the mob riot scene across the street.
Then we went to Trader Joe's, and thence home to the hotel.
Oh, and: Trader Joe's dark chocolate sea salt caramels are the NOMMEST OF ALL NOMS. It's not the flavour itself, but the intensity of it -- sea salt with dark chocolate and caramel, OH GOD.
We're going to a plaaaaaay tonight as soon as we figure out where to eat diiiiiinner.
*runs off to have a nap*

Nov. 15th, 2008 10:11 pmSam:THAT. Was a GREAT PLAY.
Mum: Are you going to blog about it?
Sam: I am going to blog about it!
Mum: It's blog fodder, huh?
Sam: Everything is blog fodder.
Mum: Well, say hello to the internet for me.
HEY INTERNET, mum says hi.
We had great seats for The Marriage Of Figaro by Remy Bumppo Theatre Company at Victory Gardens Greenhouse tonight. It was awesome, just the quintessential high-quality farce, which was kind of a surprise because 1. I've seen a production of a play translated by Ranjit Bolt before, and it was painful (though it was Lysistrata, so it would have been painful anyway) and 2. Mum usually has uncanny Bad Theatre Radar, which always leads her to select the worst possible theatre in any given place at any given time. She once consciously chose skit night at the Georgetown Community Theatre over free Shakespeare in the park.
Anyway, we got lucky this time, which just shows me that I should have faith in Remy Bumppo, because they do great work. Also the theatre was packed, which is always nice to see.
Tomorrow we are going to buy me my very own trash can. I can hardly contain my excitement!
