I got up this morning and rearranged my furniture!

And then arranged it all back :D

The major issue is that I have a radiator in the middle of the most useful wall, rendering it less than useful -- I can't put a couch along that wall, but I can't put a TV in front of a RADIATOR. And okay, the other major issue is the television that I never use. I don't have the TV on hardly ever, unless R is over, but when he is over it's nice to have it on and have a good place to sit to watch it. Otherwise I'd...put it under the bed or something.

Anyway, I have a Plan. I'm Planning to move the futon against the back wall of the living room and install a workbench (yes, for maskmaking!) in front of the windows where the futon is now. The light there is amazing and it'll be nice to be able to sit there to eat sometimes, too. This is the workbench I'm buying: The Ikea Norden Gateleg. It's heavy, but it is exactly what I need (storage drawers!), it fits the space, and someday when I have a larger place it'll be perfect for a dining-room table.

Mum and Dad have a chair that belonged to my gran, it's the most awesomely hideous orange ever, and it's incredibly comfortable. I'm going to somehow get it up here from Texas and install it where the futon was, and lo: it shall be R's Chair. Once that's accomplished I can buy another chair to put on the other side of the radiator, probably the Ikea Ektorp.

This way I have the futon in the corner for people who are visiting or if I want to nap, two nice chairs for TeeVee watching, a really cool coffee table to put between them, and a workbench.

Yes. Everything I own comes from Ikea. And you can mock Ikea all you want, but their prices are comparable to any other furniture store out there ($300+ cheaper, if you're buying a bed) and they have the shit I need. I will never buy a bookcase from them, because their bookcases are either hideous or clunky, but they have my workbench and I am going to give them moneys to get it.

It's a process, of course. I have enough money in savings to buy the table and chair and get the orange chair shipped up from Texas, but I also have a policy of keeping two months' rent in savings in case I get laid off. So while I have a little over $2k in savings, I actually only have about $150 in savings.

That being said, I'm pretty proud that I live beneath my means these days. I'm making high payments on my one credit card from back when I was unemployed, and I'm also overpaying my student loan each month. I never talk about this stuff because I feel like it's tempting the gods, but I'm doing more than just treading water now, which is a nice feeling.

I cleaned, too. I have three bags (TOTE BAGS) of stuff to take to Howard Brown for donation, if I have the time after the Costco run.

Now to work on the TARDIS Big Bang fic, due tomorrow. I have the requisite draft count of 15k words -- I think I actually have the final-draft 20k at this point -- but it's not done yet. Deadlines, deadlines...
