So, I came across this list of Top 100 SFF novels of all time, and as with most lists there's room for error and disagreement but some of the books just strike me as very odd inclusions. (For one thing, there's a shit-ton of Heinlein and while I respect the guy I don't think he was all that great. There's also a shit-ton of Gene Wolfe, whose work I can't assess as I haven't read it.)

I mean, do we collectively think Nabokov's Pale Fire is SFF? I realise genre definitions are a little bit fluid, but I think one's definition of either SciFi or Fantasy would have to be pretty fucking broad to include Pale Fire.

In other news, Serious Eats has released the Top 10 Googled Recipes of 2009, which I suppose is anthropologically fascinating, but all I can think is that I should clearly learn to master these ten foods:

Cheap protein, carbs, and pleasure foods. )

To sum up: I feel I have mastered these, which is why for my next trick I will make a German dish involving eggs poached in mustard sauce. Because life is short, that's why.
What's a little shameless self-promotion among friends?

I didn't actually want to post about the FOX-adapting-Torchwood rumours, because I call bullshit so hard I might have sprained something, but I am acknowledging its existence so people will stop linking me to it. The rumours are thus: FOX is going to create an American version of Torchwood with RTD's help, possibly hiring Barrowman to play Jack and rebooting Doctor Who as well. I cannot tell you how much I am LOL at this.

Anyway, I thought as long as I'm acknowledging it, I might as well recc out an old fic so if it does turn out to be true you can be all, BEEN THERE DONE THAT.

Welcome to Torchwood USA:

Second City Torchwood: David Tennant has been cast as Jack Harkness, a time-traveling immortal trapped on Earth in the 21st century. Join him, coffee boy Ian, ex-cop Gwen, New York doctor Owen, tech twins Tamaki and Toshiko, and the mysterious Doctor (played by John Barrowman) for a season of high scifi adventure!

Edgar Van Scyoc Presents Doctor Who: Having triumphed with Torchwood, Executive Producer Edgar van Scyoc and head writer Ellis Graveworthy continue on with a second season and spin the Doctor off into a show all his own, with companions Rose Tyler, Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, and Ross Jenkins.
