And then my computer died!

I think it's just a heat problem, my fan is busted or something. GREAT TIMING, COMPUTER, break right before I'm going away for a week. I planned to take the netbook with me anyway, so in one sense it's all good, but the earliest I can get it in for repairs will be something like...Thursday after next.

I can, at least, get it to boot and I can see that all my data's still there. It's just that every time I try to open a folder, the laptop screams and shuts down and I have to remove the battery and unplug it to get the little glowy green lights to go off.

THE MACHINES HAVE OUTFOXED ME.

Ironically I was in the middle of an essay on the metaphor of the Cyberman in modern Doctor Who, to wit, the repetitious cautionary tale of trying to get the power of the digital age without succumbing to the strength of it (and if you look at Classic Who there's a movement from fear and mistrust of machines to fear and mistrust of the humans who facilitate the machines). It was a whole big thing.

CYBERMEEEEEN! *barrowman fistshake*
My father thinks the video card on my computer is buggered. I think he might be right. See exhibit A, "Things a computer is not supposed to do when you run the safe mode diagnostic tool":
