May. 6th, 2010 10:53 amI can't be the only person trying to lifehack Netflix and Last.fm's preference algorhythms, can I?
I don't know why I care about these things, but I want to get all up in their shapes and see how they work. Netflix, at least, tells you why it recommends stuff to you, though occasionally their logic is a bit baffling. I rate things there not because I enjoy rating things, especially, but because I want to tweak and adjust the little monkeys in the computer box. I want to load it up with so much information that it develops an artificial intelligence about what kind of films I like, because then maybe it could explain it to me.
There are films I truly and deeply love, and I respect the art of filmmaking as a craft, and sometimes the films I truly and deeply love are blasphemies against the art of filmmaking as a craft. The thing is, 99% of all films I see are completely uninteresting to me, and 98% of those are films someone told me I would adore or films someone told me I would be a philistine for not adoring. Which is why I never go to the cinema anymore. I'm still recovering from Pixar crushing my love for them with the heinous mess that was Wall-E.
But I got this free month of movies from Netflix, so I'm trying to convince it and myself that someday it will understand me. It's a little like dating in high school.
Right now Netflix thinks I mostly like lesbians, muppets, and cheap scifi.
