May. 22nd, 2010

Ironically, once I got back to my room yesterday evening and actually had the time to ruminate, I didn't know what to talk about. I'm sure some of it was fatigue, and not wanting to go over my quite haphazard notes anymore until I'd slept first.

Irrelevant to the subject matter of the various lectures, there are two problematic points with this conference. Both are sort of...cosmetic, one perhaps a bit more significant than the other, but as long as I have a captive audience...

Backseat driving ALL OF ACADEMIA, because that's how I roll. )

Today is a full day, and unlike yesterday I'm going to try not to go home after the third session, because tonight is the HOGROAST and I know that if I walk home, not even the HOGROAST will tempt me to walk back. And if I don't go to the HOGROAST I will regret it all my days.

There will probably be onions.
The conference has been a little more slammin' today, which is both nice and stressful, but right before lunch I attended a presentation on LOLCATS.

U CAN HAZ SKOLARCHIP, TAEK SUM MYSOGYNY TOO. )

I ditched out on the third session because I am nursing a migrane, which is already fading (thank you, prescription-strength ibuprofen) and I didn't want to be the rude dude who sits in the corner and rubs his eyes the whole time.
I am just about all report-ed out, for now, but I have to say this is the most fannish non-fancon conference ever, seriously. I just saw a featured talk on Twitter and backchannel communication among students, using the TARDIS as a metaphor for the way Twitter functions and the Weeping Angels as a signifier for student activity online.

Truly we are all bigger on the inside.

FORTY-FIVE MINUTES TO HOGROAST. Can you feel the excitement in the air, or is that just cracklins I smell?
This hogroast was swankier than anticipated. I was crestfallen not to find a whole roast hog anywhere. Good food though. That is three forms of pork on one plate!
