This morning, my department kicks off some new software for us, which is supposed to help track and resolve company issues. IF ONLY IT WERE ALWAYS THAT EASY. I have many issues; would that I could just fill out my name in the "resolved by" box and click "issue closed".

It's markedly less efficient for me to use this than to just do what I was doing before, but in the bigger picture it's more effective for providing a wide view of our activities. On the other hand, most people who have issues email me directly, rather than emailing the listserv that now forwards to this new software, so it's mostly up to me to track my own work anyway.

But, since we're all using it, I have to use it too, which means I have to learn how to use it. Ttraining has turned out to be a little thin on the ground, so I'm adhering to the Jack Baker technique: pull on everything until something breaks.

I have so far successfully broken the program twice this morning. It's all very exciting and technological. Our IT guy hates me.

I slept restlessly last night, unusually so for me, but when I did finally get into unbroken sleep I woke up with the plot of the YA novel I'm going to pitch, so I think there's a net gain in there somewhere. In some ways it's mostly pulling from other source canons, but sci-fi is a big hotbed of theft anyway, and I think I'm skilled enough to assemble it and still make it original. There's a lot to polish -- it's more concept than plot right now -- but it's a relief to have found something I think I can write about without getting bored and frustrated, which is often my default state when I choose to write on command.
