Good morning all! It's time for Radio Free Monday, the first in two weeks! Let's dive in, shall we?

Folks What Need Help

[livejournal.com profile] darthrami and [livejournal.com profile] strange_selkie are in a financial jam -- their wages have gone down but the rent has stayed the same, and they make just barely too much to qualify for rent-assisted housing. They're looking for help in two ways -- one, they have a paypal address set up, boothgal at hotmail.com, where they are asking for donations for help for a moving fund. Two, they can stay in the house they're in if they find a roommate, but they have a small child and finding a trustworthy roommate can be tricky in that situation. This is from a locked post but with permission: If anybody knows of somebody in the DC area who needs a place to live: we are a same-sex couple with a baby and 3 cats. We have a 3br/2.5ba townhouse and have one of the smaller bedrooms or possibly the big bedroom (with en suite bath) available. Could possibly be furnished if needed. We're not partiers, we don't drink much. I've know Rami and Selkie personally for years and they are Good People. If you know someone who's looking for a roommate situation, consider hooking 'em up. :)

[livejournal.com profile] metallumai wrote to let me know that queen of English folk song, Norma Waterson, is very very ill and has been in hospital since early November -- she had an abcess on her lower leg which turned into septicemia. She is making slow progress but is still in ICU, on a ventilator, running intermittent fever. They're not looking for donations or financial help -- but some cards or letters, something to brighten up her hospital stay, would be really welcome. You can comment here to get more info and a mailing address.

Buy Awesome Stuff

[livejournal.com profile] bodlon / [personal profile] bodlon has begun a neat new subscription service: Hold Something. He's offering a story and photo sent to your address, every month, plus other random goodies as the whim takes him. The subscription is between $5.50 and $6.50/month, depending on location. I'm working with him on this as his beta-reader, and I know he does quality work. You support your (internet-)local artist when you subscribe!

[livejournal.com profile] haikujaguar is an artist and writer whose house is currently infested with mold so bad it's no longer livable. The cost of repairing the house (which can't be sold in its current condition) is steep; you can read more about that predicament here. She's selling a wide variety of things to raise money for the house repairs, including books, art, mugs, and bags and you can check out her official website here. Her art's pretty awesome.

Cool Stuff People Do:

Ryan, who I've linked here before, has done a recut of Eulogy For The Walking Dead, the poem of mine that she set to music. You can find the new version here. I think it's pretty awesome!

Eve tipped me off to Kyle Cassidy, a photographer from Philly whose latest project War Paint is a photographic study of military veterans and their tattoos. He has a standing call out for veterans in the Philadelphia area who'd like to have their ink photographed, but he does photograph while traveling as well, so veterans in other areas may want to keep an eye on that space.

News To Know

Rach, who I've featured in RFM before while she was raising money for Dogboy & Justine, has an article going about begging and the social structure behind asking for money for charity, art, and other causes.

Way to instantly restore my faith in humanity, Egypt.

Andrew Wakefield is a quack who created a nonexistent link between vaccines and autism. He's been debunked for some time but Shakespeare's Sister has some new news about his (financially-driven) quackery.

Chik-Fil-A backs anti-gay activists. I never liked their chicken, or their habit of printing bible verses on their drink cups.

Ending on a Happy Note

[livejournal.com profile] jonaht linked me to Minimalist Doctor Who and I loled.

Via [personal profile] bodlon, have some Cats in sweaters.

And this has been Radio Free Monday! Thank you for your time. :) You can always post items for my attention in comments here (or on any post) or email me at copperbadge at gmail dot com (PMs are kind of a bad way to reach me; email or comments are much preferable). If you're not sure how best to proceed, here is a little more about what I do and how you can help.
I think R and I are meeting up tonight, but I can't be sure. I have offered him the choice between hamburgers or pancakes for dinner; given he is taking over an hour to respond, I think I may have totally blown his mind. (Note: I have had pancakeburgers. The pancakes tend to dissolve, it's not pretty.)

Speaking of mindboggling, Radio Free Monday totally hooked up two people who needed to rent a room out with someone who needed a place to live. In less than a day. Because we're awesome. Congrats, guys :)

And here is chapter three of Trace! Now with 100% more actual prison.

Incidentally, if you are interested on learning more about prisons and their relationship to local populations, Railburg Correctional's relationship to Railburg Township is based on the relationship between Pelican Bay State Prison and the nearby town.

As for the prison...see the X-shaped white building in this image? That's their maximum security, where prisoners are locked in their single-bunk cells in full isolation for 23 1/2 hours per day. Notice what's missing from that building? Windows.

Pelican Bay: Officially creeptastic!
Two horses, each alike in dignity....

...okay, maybe not. I don't even know what happened to lead horse, there. Here's the folding instructions, if anyone's interested. Sorry about the quality; I haven't had this camera very long and I'm still working the kinks out.

But as long as we're posting photos, this is what I had for dinner tonight. Meat and potatoes pie, om nom nom. Not a veggie to be seen. Just beef, gravy, potatoes, and pie crust. It's how man was meant to eat.
