Well, Chicago seems to be back to work this morning. The snow is high, but there are paths to everywhere I need to be, so I am here in the office, where about half the staff are in. One of them brought buns for Chinese new year, I am stuffed with bbq pork and coconut now.

The thing about snow is that fresh snow is not that dangerous. It's the muddy, gritty stuff that's been rolled around in road oil that really is a menace, at least in downtown Chicago. I am going to be bruised all over tomorrow from about half a dozen falls (I stopped counting) but the nice thing about slipping on snow is that when you fall, you fall in snow.

Still. Oof, my elbows.

NEWS OF THE WORLD! Down in the southern hemisphere, the score is Yasi 0, Australia 3: there were three births during the storm, and not a single reported death as of yet. WHEN I WISH YOU GOOD LUCK, AUSSIES, PREPARE TO FEEL LUCKY!

[livejournal.com profile] bluejeans07 linked me to the Korean TV ads for Sherlock (one and two), which...well, they do put the emphasis on very specific aspects of the show. It's like watching TV through a gay romance filter. Which, let's be honest, I do half the time anyway.

Also, Jodhpur is beautiful in blue.

A friend of mine at work sent me a photo two days ago of the aftermath of the 1967 blizzard that hit Chicago. She sent that particular image because we both know where it is; it's near the area we work, and she captioned it "Look familiar?"

So I stared at it hard and noted the location of the horizon line and the buildings, and this morning I sent her a photo back, saying "Thank God it doesn't."

The angle's not precise -- I should have noted the Wrigley building edging in there on the right -- but with a little sizing and cropping, I give you Chicago blizzards, forty-four years apart.

Supercilious rabbit would like to wish you a happy Chinese New Year!

He would also like you to bring him snacks. Get on it, people, rabbit won't be kept waiting.

Because it's the Year of the Rabbit, I took a chance and propped him up next to the candy I put out on the desk for people to grab today. I've been a bit skittish with my origami at work; it seems so silly whenever anyone catches you doing it. It's the first time I've put any of it on display, and the response was nothing short of hilarious. Every single delivery guy said some variation on "Wow, who folds origami? Is it you? How did you learn?" and a handful of staff, upon learning of my origami calendar, insisted on picking up and flicking through it. One of the interns said she'd teach me some patterns. Also, the woman I have a super secret crush on said it was adorable.

Clearly the path to true love lies in an elegant display of origami. Could be worse.
