Jun. 23rd, 2011 06:08 amI probably shouldn't have sprung that on you guys last night, huh. Sorry! I was having a moment.
But yes, BossBoss is leaving. He threatened to do this about a year ago, but HR literally hid from him so he couldn't turn in his resignation, and the urge passed. Now, apparently, his wife has changed jobs with a big enough pay bump that he doesn't need to contribute his salary. It's not that he's quitting because he doesn't have to work, it's more that he's quitting because he hasn't really been happy in his job for a long time, and now it's just easy for him to quit. He's not going to another job -- he's just leaving this one.
(Though I suspect it also has something to do with his passion for beer brewing -- he's been messing around with it for about a year and he's gotten quite good. He understands all the chemistry involved, and often attempts to explain it to me with interesting results.)
So much as I'd like to go with him, I can't, unless I go home with him and live rent-free in their basement, and I think his wife would disapprove.
In day-to-day terms, it's okay; he's done a lot to "automate" the department, and I have to ask him for approval/advice/assistance about a tenth as often as I used to. In the larger view, of course I'm anxious about whether I'll get on with his replacement, but I have yet to run into a deep down real and true complete asshole at this company -- vaguely annoying incompetents are much more common, and I can deal with those, because I scare them.
Last time BossBoss made noises about leaving, his boss called me and asked me a lot of leading questions about my qualifications to do BossBoss's job. I suspect he may try again, but I'm neither qualified to do his job nor willing to put up with the direct and specific incompetence he put up with.
On the other hand, if a certain job prospect (slight but possible) comes through for me, I'll be leaving around the same time BossBoss does, so it should be somewhat entertaining to watch the department dissolve into chaos.
