Oct. 2nd, 2011

I have cooked all the food this morning. The mac and cheese is chilling in the fridge, granola bars cooling on the counter, spaghetti with meat sauce in the crock pot, leftover beef made into sloppy joe, and yoghurt is incubating in the yoghurt incubator.

Some people bake when they're stressed. Me, I'm just a pressure cooker.

That crock pot technique, I should say, is a great way to cook dry pasta, especially shells -- you can never get all the water out of shell pasta, but this way no water ever goes into them. It gives the pasta a nice flavour, too.

Suit is all laid out for tomorrow, paperwork is packed, flat is reasonably clean, dishes done, food for the next week at least.

Where's my adulthood trophy?
Good morning all! A very early RFM today, as I don't know when I'll have time to post once I get to work. Excitement! Adventure! Terror!

Radio Free Monday!

Ways To Give:

Technically this is a "Give For Free" -- they're not asking for donations, just for petition signings and email activism -- but I wanted to feature it topmost because it's fairly time-sensitive. Multiple people linked me this week to the story of Renee-Nicole Douceur, the Winter Site Manager at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, who suffered a debilitating stroke last month and is being refused emergency unscheduled transport to a medical facility by Raytheon and the National Science Foundation. You can find more information here, including a petition to sign and some addresses to email about the situation.

[personal profile] quinfirefrorefiddle, who linked to the Moser family's struggle with cancer a few weeks ago, has some unfortunate news to report: their three-year-old son has been diagnosed with a brain tumor. They're asking for donations to help battle Maddox's cancer as well.

Buy Stuff, Help Out:

[livejournal.com profile] _sabriel let me know that [personal profile] ephemere is taking preorders for Kandila, a calligraphic book of bilingual poetry. The book looks amazing, and proceeds help support [personal profile] ephemere after being terminated from her job over her identity and beliefs. There are also other beautiful works on offer. Even if you can't afford to buy, check out her blog, it's filled with gorgeous word art.

[livejournal.com profile] thefannishwaldo has new Halloween stuff up at her Etsy, WizardAtWork. HALLOWEEN SOAP, guys. That's all I have to say.

Help For Free:

[livejournal.com profile] mamculuna's son and his partner have put up a website to present themselves as a family available to open adoption. They look like awesome guys. Pass the word around and let's get her a grandkid, yes?

News to Know:

[personal profile] brainwane wants folks to know that "the GNOME open source software project has just opened to a new round of applicants. It is a way for women all around the world to dip their toe into the technology field by doing remote internships -- translations, art, documentation, coding, and other tasks." You can find more information here. There's a stipend of USD$5,000 and the deadline is October 31st.

[personal profile] xtricks let me know that the petition to convince Paypal to stop offering services to hate groups has now come full circle, with a Christian news outlet, LifeSiteNews, lobbying for reinstatement of the hate groups PayPal dropped.

I will admit openly that I don't know all I could about the #occupy movements in New York and Boston (I believe there's one in Chicago too) but if you're interested in the #occupyboston movement, [livejournal.com profile] spiderine has a site up to document her involvement.

Just For Fun:

Jen shared with me the Batmobile -- classic roadster style.

[livejournal.com profile] kriken let me know that Slashcast, after a year hiatus, is back as a multifandom slash podcast (formerly they were only Harry Potter). Their first two new episodes have segments on White Collar and BBC Sherlock, so the Slashcasters thought you all would probably be interested.

Historyshots has just posted a great Genealogy of Airlines in the United States.

Chicago is America's Most Mustache-Friendly city, according to the American Mustache Institute. It's because we're awesome. Also, remember: Movember is coming!

And this has been Radio Free Monday! Thank you for your time. You can always post items for my attention in comments here (or on any post) or email me at copperbadge at gmail dot com. If you're not sure how to proceed, here is a little more about what I do and how you can help. Remember, non-embedded links are love.
