Oct. 17th, 2011 08:15 amGood morning, Cafe! And welcome to Radio Free Monday. I have a bagel and a spirit of goodwill, so let's go!
Ways To Give:
This falls under "news to know" as well, but multiple people this week have linked me to the "Mississippi Personhood Amendment" which would grant fertilized eggs and fetuses personhood status. You can do the reading for yourself, but even if you are anti-abortion, this law is not good for you, and it's not good for women -- and the group that introduced the amendment is coming to your state next. All the valid information can be found here.
folknits has a ticket available for a Joan Baez concert on the 30th of October in Chicago, and is "selling" it in return for a $55 donation to Amnesty International or Doctors Without Borders. I think it's a great way to both help people and share music!
esmenet let me know about
eisen, who is offering commissions on art, graphics, and fics and also asking for donations. Her ask post is locked, but you can find all the relevant information here.
boundbooks let me know that award-winning sci-fi author Tobias Buckell currently holding a Kickstart Project for funding the fourth book in his Carribean-inspired sci-fi series, which started with Crystal Rain. The project is currently hovering at around $7,300 out of the needed $10,000, and the deadline is October 19th.
fuzzytail's kids are involved with The Grace Foundation, a shelter for abused and unwanted animals (mainly livestock and horses, but also dogs and cats) in Northern California. The cost of feed is skyrocketing, and The Grace Foundation is soliciting donations for assistance. There are many ways to help listed here including sponsorship and, if you're local, fostering and adopting.
snufflesdbear linked me to a facebook page about three kittens in New York who need a forever home, or their rescuers will need to take them to a shelter later this week. If you know anyone who wants a kitty or can foster some, pass the word! If you're looking to get in touch but can't figure Facebook out (like me) you can contact snufflesdbear at gmail.com for more information.
spiderine linked to a call for knitters to help make sweaters for penguins. For real!
News To Know:
You know, I say this with love and apology in my heart: women, this has not been a great week to be you.
kallaneboi linked to an article in the New York Times about Topeka decriminalizing domestic violence.
snaxcident was at Occupy Toronto this weekend and has the Best Protest Signs From Occupy Toronto up at her website, Nonprofity.
Fans Helping Fans:
watersword is looking for someone to sublet her room in an apartment in NYC. I'll let the comment she left speak for itself: "Ten minutes from Columbia University, there is a room. It faces north. You are not likely to be eaten by a grue, although one of the roommates is a D&D dork. One of the others is a serious trumpet player, and the last is a journalism school student who cooks rad authentic Chinese food. To enter and take possession, you must pay a toll of $715 in rent and approx. $30 in utilities. Nearby is a grocery store and two subway stops. Which way do you turn?"
pinkfinity let me know that Ascendio, a Harry Potter convention in Florida next year, has a Call For Proposals out for the con -- panels, presentations, performances and such are all welcome. They also have their meetups signup page available you can go there and set up a meetup for like-minded fans, including requesting space to hold the meetup in.
Feature: What's Up In Chicago?
For Chicagowans, by Chicagowans...
The Chicago Public Library is having a "City Of Big Readers" survey, about what we read and who we are. It has the usual quirks of big surveys -- binary gender options, for a start -- but it's an interesting survey to take nonetheless.
reebchan let me know that the Cultural Policy Center is hosting workshops at the Harris School of Public Policy in Hyde Park; they take place mostly during the day on Tuesdays, but they're putting the talks online afterwards as well.
The Randolph Street "Modern Vintage" market is coming!
Just For Fun:
Okay, randomly and probably because I didn't do as much surfing as usual this week, I found myself without any "Just For Fun" links. So I'm throwing wide the gates of Radio Free Monday. Comment on the post if you have a fun website, an interesting news story, or even just a funny picture to share. I won't be linking them next week; this is just for us all to have a bit of a Monday morning party.
