Dec. 19th, 2011 08:40 amGood morning all, and welcome to Radio Free Monday!
PLEASE NOTE: Next week there will be no Radio Free Monday. I'll be at home, and only have my netbook, and I'll be with family, so I'm declaring a break. You're still welcome to share links here, and those will be posted on January 2nd. Thanks all!
Anyway, this week, it's amazing, but this week I have no Ways To Give. So I thought I'd deliver a little speech on My Philosophy of Giving. You're welcome. :D
( Not quite two for non, but close. )
And onward!
Give For Free:
Anon linked me to Just Detention International, who are trying to collect messages to include on holiday cards for survivors of prison rape. There's an article about it here and you can fill out the extremely easy form here to send a message.
Fans Helping Fans:
priscellie is moving to LA for grad school in filmmaking, and looking for a roommate starting in January! I've known Pris for years and will personally vouch for her endearing personality and tendency not to serial-kill people. You can respond to her here.
via_ostiense is moving to Argentina and needs to get rid of some books! She has a full list here of her books for sale. Help out a fellow fan and get some great literature! (baby lawyers, there are also LSAT prep materials for sale!)
frith linked me to the Dreamwidth Account Free For All! During the month of December, you can open a DW account without a code. Please be responsible in opening accounts, but I encourage anyone who hasn't at least given it a spin yet to try it out.
brainwane linked me to a get-one, give-one sale Candlemark & Gleam is having throughout December. For the month of December, any time you buy directly from the Candlemark & Gleam website, you’ll receive a link to create a gift voucher you can give to a new patron, good for any Candlemark & Gleam eBook.
News To Know:
kukkaseksi linked me to an excellent story (which has since gone viral) about a pair of identical twins, one of whom is a young transgendered woman, and the help she received from her family and from doctors to transition as an adolescent, as well as her struggle for acceptance.
orangepenguino linked me to Marion Call's website -- I've linked her before -- where she's offering a sort of scholarship program. Donors to her site have given money towards digital copies of her latest album, and you can sign up to receive one here. And if you are feeling particularly flush this season, you can also join the Donor's Circle and help provide music to less fortunate folks. :)
In less awesome book news,
taerowyn linked me to a post about how Amazon is offering discounts on books for people who report the in-store prices of those books. There's a great breakdown in the post of how much money goes into your community if you shop at Amazon, chains, and local indy stores.
Now, there's an article on Slate about how attackers of Amazon are missing the point, and I'm going to link it because it's always interesting to compare and contrast, but the reason I don't shop at Amazon is unrelated to Slate's arguments, which are deftly deflated by Salon's counter-article anyway. Their lower prices screw authors and publishers, and they have a history of throwing their weight around in occasionally homophobic and misogynistic ways. I don't scorn people who shop at Amazon -- but I won't do it myself, and I encourage people to find online and brick-and-mortar alternatives. In this Forbes article, Jeff Bezos essentially says that Amazon doesn't care what you think of it, and isn't going to listen to you. Do you really want to give them your money?
ineptshieldmaid, in response to last week's post about graduate education, links to an essay about ways to handle your grad school experience.
Just For Fun:
Schmeckel: a transgender Jewish klezmer punk band. What could be nicer? If you're in New York, so are they!
Schwinntonation makes music out of bicycles! It's as cool as it sounds.
These next few links are ads, and it's not like you're not gonna notice that. But I think they're fun ads, and while I don't know anything about Brooks Brothers or Chipotle's political leanings, I can appreciate the ads as the little artistic works they are:
Lambs sing Jingle Bells and its sequel, Behind The Scenes
Chipotle preaches locavore while Willie Nelson covers Cold Play's The Scientist. No, for real! There's also a link to download the song, with proceeds going to the Chipotle Cultivate Foundation.
And this has been Radio Free Monday! Thank you for your time. You can always post items for my attention in comments here (or on any post) or email me at copperbadge at gmail dot com. If you're not sure how to proceed, here is a little more about what I do and how you can help. Remember, non-embedded links are love.
