Jan. 2nd, 2012 06:51 amGood morning all, and welcome to the first Radio Free Monday of 2012! LET'S DO THIS THANG.
Ways To Give:
spiderine is having a DEBORK MY LAPTOP bake sale. She needs to raise about $100 to fix her laptop, and is going to be selling scones, eight for $10 plus shipping, in sets of two each Monday. You can see her post here at LJ or here at DW; those posts will be open to purchasers starting noon eastern today and continuing weekly. I can personally vouch for the superior quality of Spider's scones.
Anon let me know about a documentary being planned around an original play based on the Grand Guignol Theatre of Victorian Paris. They're running a kickstarter to fund the documentary's post-production process; the raw footage and performances are there, but they need help to get the product out. This sounds like a great way to help share a unique theatrical experience, and if you're interested in pledging and getting neat perks for it -- or even just reading more about it! -- you can do so here.
Tina has a post up here about a large group of cats she's had to take in after her sister, a pet hoarder, died recently. I've spoken to her about getting the SPCA involved, because these cats have dubious medical histories (a caveat to you guys as well) but she's also looking to place them quickly with homes in the Dayton, Ohio area, so that they won't have to go to kill shelters. It's a real bind, and she could use some help.
snufflesdbear let me know about some kitties in Long Island who really need a home.
Help For Free:
snaxcident let me know about Leave Your Mark, a Facebook poll with a twist. You go and vote for one of five Christmas-themed tattoo designs; for each vote, Second Harvest Toronto gets a dollar. If the project gets 3000 cumulative votes, brave graphic designer Cory will get the winning tattoo inked on him!
Bridget contacted me this week asking if I'd put the word out to any physicists who read this blog. She's a high school student looking to speak to someone in the field about their experiences and what it's like as a career, and would love to make contact with someone from the Cafe. You can comment on the journal if you'd like to help, and she'll be keeping an eye out.
News To Know:
Elizabeth let me know about Home Depot's continued support of LGBT rights in the face of the American Family Association's recent petition and boycott threat. Home Depot has supported diversity and equality in the workplace for a long time, and I'm pleased they're not afraid to tell the AFA to stuff it.
darksideofstorm let me know about the deaths of two people in Louisiana from encephalitis caused by Naegleria fowleri they caught through using tapwater in their neti pots. While the odds of this happening are pretty rare, it's a good reminder that you should always use saline packets and boiled water when you use a neti pot.
Just For Fun:
iamshadow linked me to a hilarious video of Willie Garson, Tiffani Thiessen, and Tim DeKay reading "How The Grinch Stole Christmas".
geeksdoitbetter linked me to "light origami" where light-sensitive material is used to create self-folding forms.
redstapler linked me to a fascinating article about wireless modem names. I should note, since seeing that FBI Van modem name, I've seen one other FBI Van and one Police Unmarked Car. :D
And this has been Radio Free Monday! Thank you for your time. You can always post items for my attention in comments here (or on any post) or email me at copperbadge at gmail dot com. If you're not sure how to proceed, here is a little more about what I do and how you can help. Remember, non-embedded links are love.
