You know, I always thought that when you took a new job, the 90-day trial period was just a formality. I figured you had to be egregiously awful not to make it past 90 days, but apparently at my office we have some pretty stringent standards. Two people have left my office this week, one of them from one of my teams, because they didn't make the 90 day cut. Makes me wonder how I made it, my first three months at my last position.
I have the feeling if a couple of key people who've been here a while were put back on 90-day-trial, they would not last either.
It was pretty awkward when my teammate left today. I can't really be detailed, but apparently standard HR practice is that nobody except an HR rep should be in the area while the person who's been let go is packing up their stuff. I'm not sure which is worse -- packing up with everyone around you looking either sympathetic or guilty, or going in to the boss's office, being told you're being let go, and then coming out to a ghost town. Neither one seems like the way to do it, for her or for us, though I understand why it is the way it is.
Basically we went to a meeting without her, and when we came back her cube was empty. If I hadn't been prewarned, I would have been very confused.
One reason I stayed in my humble position as Ninja Office Boy for so long was that it was the perfect balance of massive power and no responsibility. It's a strange transition because I used to try and imagine what people who didn't do administration actually did, and now I'm kind of one of them, I do things and go places, but you still couldn't pay me enough to have taken my boss's place today.
I'm feeling pretty glad right now that I survived my ninety days, though I knew it was never really in jeopardy -- they didn't even have any other candidates when they hired me. Though it doesn't helps my nerves any over tomorrow's luncheon; I picked the venue and menu, signed the contract, and did the budget projection for it, so I hope to God it doesn't suck. All three of my teams, one of the teams one of my teams supports, and the boss of all four teams will all be there.
NO PRESSURE.
