Good morning all, and welcome to Radio Free Monday!

Ways To Give:

The wildfires in Colorado, some of which are threatening major cities and some of which have already encroached on urban space, are of course a conern this week. [livejournal.com profile] taerowyn linked me to a round-up of how people can help, as well as some pictures of what's happening, and and [livejournal.com profile] carmy_w linked me to an ONTD-Political post about the fires, with more links on how to help.

[personal profile] katarik linked me to a call for help from some victims of the Ohio storms that swept through on Friday; they're covering rent but trying to raise money for food, vet bills, and other necessities.

[personal profile] fuzzybluemonkeys is attempting to suppliment her part-time income by selling blank books and journals she's made. She's asking for advice and critiques on her store and you can shop her work here.

[personal profile] rising reminded me about [livejournal.com profile] aberdeen's fundraiser to take Deon, a young boy who has hypophosphatasia (a form of brittle bones) to Disneyland for his 10th birthday. They're 20% of the way there but still need donations and would love to have advice about the trip. The money will go to cover medical costs and transportation, among other things.

Dan Schreiner is raising money to make a 3-D film entitled "War Is Helvetica", about Arial and Helvetica going to war with each other. You can check out his kickstarter here.

Give For Free:

[personal profile] secondsilk let me know about the budget cuts at La Trobe University in Melbourne, where the school is drastically reducing or eliminating entirely Art History, Linguistics, Indonesian, Religion and Spirituality Studies, and Gender and Sexuality Diversity Studies. I think this statement says it all: "I planned to do Honours next year, but both of my prospective supervisors have been fired." [personal profile] abouthalfthree also linked to a good writeup of the situation here. The University has two art galleries, which seems to make destroying their Art History program rather short sighted. There's a student-run petition here asking the University to reconsider its restructuring plan.

[livejournal.com profile] myemmie works for an insurance company that is reviewing its offerings for queer policyholders in an effort to revamp the policies and serve the community better. They have a survey up here asking about what people want and expect from an Employee Assistance Plan; it's geared towards the LGBT community but anyone is welcome to respond.

Fans Helping Fans:

[livejournal.com profile] futuresoon is looking for a roommate and apartment in the Seattle area, hopefully on the lower end of the price range; you can find more information here.

Beat the Heat:

[livejournal.com profile] madripoor_rose thought it was wise (and I agree) to post some tips for avoiding heatstroke, given the temperatures this summer.

[personal profile] spiderine knows the Fourth is coming, and added tips on how to drink safely in the heat.

Just For Fun:

[personal profile] tealin has a fun notice for SoCal residents -- the Independent Shakespeare Company in LA has opened their free summer Shakespeare-in-the-Park season in Griffith Park with The Winter's Tale, which (per usual) is awesome. This Thursday opens Midsummer Night's Dream, then Winter's Tale resumes on the weekend. You can view their performance calendar here.

[livejournal.com profile] bloodrebel333 linked to a story about how many computers it takes to recognise a cat.

The Avengers...Friends style.

And this has been Radio Free Monday! Thank you for your time. You can always post items for my attention in comments here (or on any post) or email me at copperbadge at gmail dot com. If you're not sure how to proceed, here is a little more about what I do and how you can help (or ask for help!). Remember, brevity is the soul of RFM.
Oh my god that was awful.

I'm not someone who hates McDonalds food. I like their hamburgers and I love their fries, but I never eat there because I've read The Omnivore's Dilemma. I broke my No McDonald's rule when I saw that they had something called a S'More Pie, which is chocolate and marshmallow in a pie crust, and how can you mess that up?

Serious Eats mentioned it, which is how I heard about it, and their review was overwhelmingly lukewarm. Did I listen? I did not. I thought, it can't be as mediocre as they're saying.

It's so much worse.

It's like if you wrapped those chemical marshmallow bits from breakfast cereal in cardboard, and then waved it somewhere near a cup of hot chocolate. It's unfood. I mean, if someone gives you one, eat it, but don't go out into the heat and stand in line and pay for one like I did. Don't do it! Let me stand as a warning!

As Adventurs go it's not that adventuresome, but given my life lately I'm counting it. Any time I leave air conditioning these days counts as an Adventur.
