I am a hot mess.

It rained like the world was ending again this morning, and I didn't realise it until I got out of the train station and stared into a wall of water downtown. Apparently this shit was felling trees in the west side, but my biggest problem was whether to wait out the rain or walk through it, which is a more serious proposition going TO work than coming FROM.

But hell, there's only so wet you can get. Though the wet you can get from a summer Chicago storm is very, very wet. And then you sit damply in air conditioning all day. I felt like wringing out my entire self. So my socks were glued into my shoes when I got home, my trousers were strangely stiff, and my shirt was still damp in spots. And I was sweating because then it warmed up.

But at least I ran into R, so I got affectionately mocked about it too. (Checking "reconnect with R" off my "List of stuff I'm ashamed of and should fix" list!) We couldn't talk long because he had rehearsal to get to, but it was good to see him.

I'm starting work earlier than usual this summer because if I work an extra half hour every day I get to go home early on Fridays, which is totally worth it. I actually am really enjoying starting at seven when nobody's there (especially on days I show up looking like a drowned rat) because I get so much done in the hour or so before everyone else arrives.

Getting up at 4:30 in order to accomplish this (I have a lot of stuff to do before I catch the 6:15 train) is a little less enjoyable, but I manage.

Dead Isle is rolling along -- I put in the headers and page numbers today, which is always a trial and had to be redone twice, but at least they're finished now. I hadn't realised when I put the ephemera in -- the letters and journal entries and occasional hand bill -- that I'd have to figure out how to set them. Whether to give them their own pages, whether to put them in a different font like I did for the blog entries and emails in Charitable Getting, all of that. Given the monster is already 460 pages, however, I decided not to set them off from the text, we'll see how that looks in proof.

Busy days. Typesetting is love, but it's also when I always remember that being a writer with a day job is really like working two jobs. Still, this thing is going to be sexy when it's done, and I suppose that's what matters.
