Good morning all, and welcome to Radio Free Monday!

Ways to Give:

Anon (actually two different anons!) linked me to a fundraiser to purchase a plot of land in South Dakota known as Pe' Sla, a sacred site to the Sioux Nation. The current owners are selling it at auction, and the Sioux have until August 25th to raise funds to purchase the plot and protect it from development. You can read more and donate at their indiegogo.

[livejournal.com profile] frek's husband is healing from a series of major surgeries that had left him in a coma for nearly six weeks. They are raising money to help cover medical bills and everyday bills that have built up because of this; you can read more about it here and donate at gofundme.

Anon linked me to a fundraiser for Wellington Rape Crisis in New Zealand. This organization provides free, unconditional and secular help to rape survivors, and is not funded by the New Zealand government. They recently had to cut their operating hours to four days a week. The fundraiser has been hugely successful thanks to some inadvertent publicity (trigger warning on that link regarding sexual assault), but they can still use all the help they can get!

Matthew Inman, who you may recall from his recent fracas with FunnyJunk when he mentioned they'd stolen his art and they tried to sue him, whereupon he declared he would raise twenty grand for charity and send them pictures of it, is running a new fundraiser to buy Nikola Tesla's lab so it can be turned into a museum. You can read his hilarious pitch here complete with donation links.

Fans Helping Fans:

[personal profile] sidentity_crisis is looking for housing in Pittsburgh from January to May of 2013. She's a student at Carnegie Mellon and only needs spring semester housing as she's spending the fall studying overseas. She's looking to sublet or share rent with someone who already has an apartment, and you can read more about her search here.

A fellow Cafe member linked me to her new novel The Superheroes Union: Dynama, a lesbian superhero romance. I actually have a copy of this and will be reading it soon, but it looks awesome. You can read an excerpt here. She's also doing a swag giveaway here (the link goes live today, so if it isn't loading for you, check again in a bit.)

[livejournal.com profile] strange_selkie and [livejournal.com profile] darthrami are looking for a housemate on the Maryland side of DC; they have a spare room with private bath they'd like to rent. They have one adorable child, a couple of adorable cats, and are both good friends of mine, so I can vouch personally for them not being murderers or weirdos. You can direct inquiries to darthrami at gmail.com.

Just For Fun:

Exciting fandom news sent to me by [personal profile] tealin: the BBC is making a docudrama about the early days of Doctor Who!

In response to last week's Classy Flashmob, [livejournal.com profile] kallaneboi sent me the Classical Special Train.

And this has been Radio Free Monday! Thank you for your time. You can always post items for my attention in comments here (or on any post) or email me at copperbadge at gmail dot com. If you're not sure how to proceed, here is a little more about what I do and how you can help (or ask for help!). Remember, brevity is the soul of RFM.
This morning started out with amusing and only slightly pedantic comic book snark. Pro tip, if the author getting a character's eye colour wrong* bothers you more than a mass-murdering alien being described as "mostly harmless", you may have a problem. Also, if you're only familiar with the most recent media iteration of a canon, say the movie version of a book, don't be a dipstick when correcting someone, because odds are they know something you don't. I don't care which canon you adhere to, but if you're sniffing at me for using actual source material, we gonna have words.

* I didn't get it wrong. Yes, Robert Downey Jr. has brown eyes; in the comics, however, Tony Stark has had blue eyes for fifty years (For the record, RDJ has only had brown eyes for forty-seven).

And then I took this photo of the EERILY GLOWING Trump Tower on my way in to work, and still missed getting caught out in the rain. So really it's been a good day.
