Nov. 19th, 2012 07:48 amGood morning all, and welcome to Radio Free Monday!
Before we begin, a note: the holidays are coming, and if you are a gift-buyer I wanted to remind everyone that a charitable donation in someone's name is perhaps not the most thrilling gift but can be a great one for people with philanthropic views, or that one person who doesn't seem to want or need much. Some organizations like Habitat for Humanity and The Humane Society sell branded goods to support excellent causes. If you know of any, please link them; I'm going to try to do some research and present some links soon.
Aaaand the requisite dose of negativity: Salvation Army kettles and bellringers are already out. While attitudes vary by branch, the Salvation Army as an institution is anti-gay and anti-trans with a terrible record when it comes to the treatment of people who don't fit a narrow moral worldview. Please do not support them. Yes, they do good work; others do the same without the hate. If you want to give this holiday season, save the spare change you'd drop in a kettle and give it to your local free clinic, human rights advocacy group, suicide hotline, food pantry, or intimate partner violence rescue center. Finding one is as easy as googling.
Ways To Give:
Alex alerted me to
snowcoma who has recently been made homeless and is looking for temporary housing in the Seattle area.
subluxate linked me to a help post for
shadowcat, who recently lost nearly everything in a house fire. There's info on what they're looking for in terms of clothes, housewares, and donations here.
deepfishy linked me to the ongoing campaign to save Pe'sla, a site in the Black Hills sacred to the Great Sioux Nation. They've managed to raise $7.5 million of the $9 million purchase price, and need to raise the rest by November 30th. They have an Indiegogo fundraiser running here.
frenchroast linked to Rolling Jubilee, one result of the Occupy movement, which uses donated money to buy debt that's being sold cheap and forgive the debts instead of collecting on them.
Help For Free:
jjhunter is searching for full-time employment in the greater Boston area. She's a tech savvy admin assistant with a broad range of previous work experience, and is open to opportunities related to science, education, public health, and/or finance, among others. You can read more details here.
Yoonna and her boyfriend are looking for a room in a shared house in Brisbane or Melbourne, Australia, starting from the last week of November. Yoonna is American-Korean, translates Korean fiction to English for a living and loves cats. Her boyfriend is from Belgium, and works in GIS systems development. They are both fannish! For pics and more personal information please contact yoonna dot cho at gmail dot com.
Jen, a veteran beekeeper, has extra honey for sale. She's not asking anyone to buy honey, though you certainly can; right now she's just looking for Facebook likes and any publicity people can give.
News To Know:
jonaht linked to an article about Ugandan anti-gay activists who are trying to get an anti-gay law passed as a Christmas gift. If you know of a human rights group doing work in Uganda that people can support or a petition people can sign, please let me know?
Just For Fun:
lexicology linked to an awesome set of LOCKPICK CUFFLINKS.
tealin linked to some fantastic billboards and bus ads going up in LA right now.
Anon linked me to the newest wave of 3-D printing technology: FIGURINE BOOTHS.
And this has been Radio Free Monday! Thank you for your time. You can always post items for my attention in comments here (or on any post) or email me at copperbadge at gmail dot com. If you're not sure how to proceed, here is a little more about what I do and how you can help (or ask for help!). Remember, brevity is the soul of RFM.
