Good morning all, and welcome to Radio Free Monday!

Before we begin, a note: the holidays are coming, and if you are a gift-buyer I wanted to remind everyone that a charitable donation in someone's name is perhaps not the most thrilling gift but can be a great one for people with philanthropic views, or that one person who doesn't seem to want or need much. Some organizations like Habitat for Humanity and The Humane Society sell branded goods to support excellent causes. If you know of any, please link them; I'm going to try to do some research and present some links soon.

Aaaand the requisite dose of negativity: Salvation Army kettles and bellringers are already out. While attitudes vary by branch, the Salvation Army as an institution is anti-gay and anti-trans with a terrible record when it comes to the treatment of people who don't fit a narrow moral worldview. Please do not support them. Yes, they do good work; others do the same without the hate. If you want to give this holiday season, save the spare change you'd drop in a kettle and give it to your local free clinic, human rights advocacy group, suicide hotline, food pantry, or intimate partner violence rescue center. Finding one is as easy as googling.

Ways To Give:

Alex alerted me to [livejournal.com profile] snowcoma who has recently been made homeless and is looking for temporary housing in the Seattle area.

[personal profile] subluxate linked me to a help post for [personal profile] shadowcat, who recently lost nearly everything in a house fire. There's info on what they're looking for in terms of clothes, housewares, and donations here.

[personal profile] deepfishy linked me to the ongoing campaign to save Pe'sla, a site in the Black Hills sacred to the Great Sioux Nation. They've managed to raise $7.5 million of the $9 million purchase price, and need to raise the rest by November 30th. They have an Indiegogo fundraiser running here.

[livejournal.com profile] frenchroast linked to Rolling Jubilee, one result of the Occupy movement, which uses donated money to buy debt that's being sold cheap and forgive the debts instead of collecting on them.

Help For Free:

[personal profile] jjhunter is searching for full-time employment in the greater Boston area. She's a tech savvy admin assistant with a broad range of previous work experience, and is open to opportunities related to science, education, public health, and/or finance, among others. You can read more details here.

Yoonna and her boyfriend are looking for a room in a shared house in Brisbane or Melbourne, Australia, starting from the last week of November. Yoonna is American-Korean, translates Korean fiction to English for a living and loves cats. Her boyfriend is from Belgium, and works in GIS systems development. They are both fannish! For pics and more personal information please contact yoonna dot cho at gmail dot com.

Jen, a veteran beekeeper, has extra honey for sale. She's not asking anyone to buy honey, though you certainly can; right now she's just looking for Facebook likes and any publicity people can give.

News To Know:

[livejournal.com profile] jonaht linked to an article about Ugandan anti-gay activists who are trying to get an anti-gay law passed as a Christmas gift. If you know of a human rights group doing work in Uganda that people can support or a petition people can sign, please let me know?

Just For Fun:

[personal profile] lexicology linked to an awesome set of LOCKPICK CUFFLINKS.

[personal profile] tealin linked to some fantastic billboards and bus ads going up in LA right now.

Anon linked me to the newest wave of 3-D printing technology: FIGURINE BOOTHS.

And this has been Radio Free Monday! Thank you for your time. You can always post items for my attention in comments here (or on any post) or email me at copperbadge at gmail dot com. If you're not sure how to proceed, here is a little more about what I do and how you can help (or ask for help!). Remember, brevity is the soul of RFM.
We got a new phone system installed last week and Office Grandpa is VERY ANGRY about it.

Don't get me wrong, I love Office Grandpa. He's a nice guy and he's been with the company forever; I honestly think at this point they just don't have the heart to fire him. Technically his job is digital archivist, and while apparently he's had no complaints I felt a little worried when the DIGITAL ARCHIVIST asked me to show him how to send an attachment a few weeks ago. That seems like something he should know.

But the point is, he is not Office Grandpa because of his age, he is Office Grandpa because he is SUCH A GRANDPA. He is constantly muttering discontentedly about things when he's not telling us stories of days gone by. Admittedly I encourage some of this, since he's a WWII buff on the combat end (as opposed to me, on the cultural end) and it's fun to freak out the office by talking war with him.

This morning's MORTAL FOE OF OFFICE GRANDPA is the new phone system. He is enraged that they gave us new phones and didn't give us instruction manuals. I haven't even tried to tell him the infocard is all the manual you need because this is the most intuitive goddamn phone I've ever seen. Seriously, I think this phone might be telepathic. It knows what I need, seemingly before I need it.

But he has spent the last twenty minutes working out what button you push if you want to delete a voicemail before hearing the end of it. He literally called into his voicemail and just started pushing buttons.

HE'S SO ANGRY. IT CRACKS ME UP. I expect him to tell me to turn the thermostat down, next.
I am doing a blog tour for City War starting today! I've never done one of those before! I am in no way terrified!

Actually the fear is slowly being overcome by pleasure at seeing the book get so much publicity. Today I kicked off the tour at Elisa's Reviews, and also got a review at Joyfully Jay. Four stars, not bad :)

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE ROMANS.
