Dec. 1st, 2012 06:18 pmWe had a consultant at work this week. Among other things...
I was frankly rather sullen about the consultant, privately, because I had visions of trust falls and team building. Fortunately our consultant was actually really there to improve our workflow, like they said, which is PRACTICALLY A FIRST.
He was there for our department in specific, to get things sorted out a bit, which is fair enough; our office is lovely but deeply chaotic, in part because we face unusual demands that don't allow for a regular schedule of work. But he had a lot of interesting things to say about the way Research interacts with Everyone Else. He had flow charts, and I hate to say it but I do respect a flow chart.
And also, as I discovered when my boss said "The consultant has ten minutes free -- keep him busy for me, he's a Doctor Who fan," our consultant was a HUGE NERD.
We got to talking about Doctor Who and his recent trip to Cardiff to actually see where it films (and yes, visit Mermaid Quay), and then he mentioned he's still looking for certain issues of the IDW Doctor Who comic. Which got us onto comic books, whereupon he actually took a handful of comics out of his briefcase and was showing me the art on them when my boss came back.
NERD TRIUMPH.
Never let it be said that fandom doesn't have its perks. :D
