Dec. 4th, 2012 12:17 pmI FINALLY FINISHED A BOOK. Man it feels like forever since I've done that.
I couldn't get through Ben Okri's "The Famished Road" -- it had some really interesting moments, but it was such a vague book, somehow, and I kept losing the thread. As with Murakami, a lot of stuff just kind of seemed to happen for no reason. It's 100% possible I just don't have the cultural grounding for these books.
I didn't really have the knowledge necessary for "The Kingdom Of This World" by Alejo Carpentier, either; it's about Haiti, in particular the series of revolutions that followed ( the liberation from French colonialist rule. )
Final Verdict: I really enjoyed "The Kingdom Of This World" and I think it's a book that carries some real weight, as short as it is. I suspect I'd get even more out of it if I had done a little reading-up on Haiti first, but even knowing almost nothing about it, I enjoyed it.
