Jan. 14th, 2013 08:17 amGood morning everyone, and welcome to Radio Free Monday!
Ways To Give:
Christian linked to Krelllabs, who is offering art in exchange for donations to help keep her afloat while she's in hard financial straits. She's raised enough to cover immediate needs, but is keeping the offer open as she's likely going to be facing more problems in the near future.
alarivana linked to Enzo Volante, who has a startup designing custom, geeky clothing. He's been featured on Kotaku and thus has enough orders to produce clothing on a larger scale than previous, and he's running an indiegogo to raise money for the new equipment.
iamshadow linked to
kath_ballantyne's post with information about helping pets, farm animals, and wildlife affected by the fires in southern Tasmania.
888mph linked to a fundraiser to help save the Azores Bullfinch and its habitat.
idancewithlife linked to a kickstarter for Files That Last, a book about digital preservation and its place in modern society.
ladyyueh linked to an indiegogo for The Posterchildren, "a YA superhero novel that focuses on LGBTQ themes, female empowerment, POCs, and minority issues." The first chapter is available for everyone to read, and there are some pretty good perks!
Help For Free:
subluxate let me know that the FDA will be holding a hearing on January 24th and 25th to consider making hydrocodone a Schedule II drug, which will make it much harder to get medication like Vicodin, commonly prescribed for things like dental surgery (I've used it myself in the past after car accidents and for headache pain). I agree that this is not a move that benefits patients, and if you do too you can comment here and leave your feedback.
waldo's awesome recycled crayons will be featured in a major national magazine in April, and she's preparing for an influx of orders. She's asking for people to send in their old, busted-up crayons, and hoping some folks may be willing to organize collection drives at schools and such. You can check out her Dreamwidth post or her comment here for more info or to get in touch; she's happy to pay for postage and trade goods for donations.
arsenicjade is running a poll on the potential popularity and level of interest fandom may have in a dating website dedicated to fans meeting other fans. Go and register your opinion!
lunar8i8star is part of the selection panel for an essay contest about American politics. They've had low submission numbers and are still soliciting essays through January 21st. She says essays should be 1,200 words or less on the theme of "Leading and Uniting America in a Time of Change"; the contest is aimed at students but open to all, and the top prize is $2K. You can go here for more information.
Just For Fun:
I know I am like the last person ever to see this but I can't help it.
kallaneboi showed me THE CUP SONG. It's awesome!
stgreyhounds linked to I Found Your Camera, a website showing images from cameras, memory cards, and USB keys turned in to lost and founds, in the hopes that they can reunite them with their owners.
A bunch of people have linked me to the New Yorker article about Apollo Robbins, a "performance pickpocket" who does shows in Vegas -- the article is great and it's cool to see him getting good publicity!
Chai wanted me to let folks know that they've extended the audition deadline for the Dead Isle Podfic Project to January 28, so there's still time to try for a part! You can learn more at
deadislepodfic,
deadislepodfic, and here on tumblr.
And this has been Radio Free Monday! Thank you for your time. You can always post items for my attention in comments here (or on any post) or email me at copperbadge at gmail dot com. If you're not sure how to proceed, here is a little more about what I do and how you can help (or ask for help!). Remember, brevity is the soul of RFM.
