Feb. 7th, 2013 10:26 amTHE BUDGET IS DONE.
I MAY EXPLODE FROM JOY.
Except that would require more energy than I can summon, I think.
In all, this year, I managed five departments' worth of money (my own and others' at their request) and hopefully, if the budgets get approved, turned $250K (last year's collective total budget) into $275K (this year's projected budget needs).
Everyone is terrified of the budget, more or less. I was, last year, but I was frightened more by the idea that I would fuck up the process than by the idea that I was handling more money than I make in a year and responsible for where it was allocated. This year, quarter of a million dollars? PFFT WHATEVER.
But the problem is that this paralyzing fear of fucking up has infected my bosses, who struggle to make decisions because they don't realise that if you have $50K and are asking for $70K the worst thing that will happen under our current budget process is that you will only get $50K again. And none of this is salary budget, so it's not like anyone will be fired. Fifty thousand dollars to spend on your department for a year is literally the worst thing that can happen if you do something wrong. SO MAKE A DECISION ALREADY OH MY GOD.
There are a couple of people I work with whose skills I respect enormously and who I like as people and who for two weeks, every year, I wish to stab repeatedly because they cannot make up their god damned minds.
BUT. It is done now. Glory hallelujah.
