I always get the urge to rewrite his work. STOP USING SO MANY ADJECTIVES. STOP WRITING IN UNREADABLE DIALECT FOR PARAGRAPHS ON END. OH GOD THE RACISM. That could have been a really scary story if your goddamn prose wasn't in the way, asshole!
Reading The Dunwich Horror is what brought it on, because the dialect in that book is so unnecessary and classist and difficult, and about 80% of the plot is contained in it. But they're all that way. The Colour Out Of Space is one of the better ones in terms of dialect, but one of the worst in terms of OH GOD SO MANY WORDS. I know he got paid by the word, but still.
And the thing is, whenever I read The Colour Out Of Space, I rarely really fix on the supposedly scary stuff. What always strikes me is the absolute apathy of the story.
( Spoilers behind the cut! )
Anyway. I rarely have the motivation to focus hard enough on his work to get the meat, because I'm not that scared or thrilled or affected by most of it even after I've plowed through it. But The Colour Out Of Space still nags at me a bit.
