Nov. 18th, 2013 07:25 amGood morning everyone, and welcome to Radio Free Monday!
Before we begin, drop your socks and grab your crocs because SAM'S CAFE JOB FAIR is coming! Dust off your resume, come up with any career questions you have, think about any job openings your company is offering, and otherwise prep for the job fair. On Wednesday of this week I will make a Job Fair post where people can gather to chat about networking, offer their services, and try to get some folks employed.
I am also going to be adding a new feature, the Help Fair, soliciting advice about social services and public housing aid. I've spoken to three people in the last month about getting housing aid in particular, but I've never done it personally so I'm not well-versed; all I can tell them to do is google. If you have experiences getting on disability, food aid, or housing aid, anywhere in the world, please come share them so others can get help too. Directions for how to share will be in the post.
The post will be on LiveJournal, but I'll link from Dreamwidth and Tumblr as well. 9am US Central Time on 11/20 is our start goal.
Ways To Give: Personal
justice_turtle is penniless and about to be homeless. He needs money for food, transportation, and medical expenses until he can get a job or start college next semester. You can read more here and donate here to help.
elliemurasaki is holding an Internet Garage Sale to raise funds to help her get out of an unstable housing situation. There are tons of DVDs for sale at the post, as well as links to an Etsy shop, an art-commission post, and a tarot reading post.
Cathy is requesting help from anyone who knows someone who is fed through total parenteral nutrition and has survived complications, anyone who knows about its effects on the liver, severe back pains that could be associated with it, or possible small bowel transplants. She's looking for people who have personal or medical experience (she has found general sites through google) who can provide advice and information; she has a close family friend who has short bowel syndrome and is too young to expect a transplant. If you have info please email her at cdurot at gmail.com.
Anon linked to a fundraiser for Alex, a child with autism and self-injurious behavior who needs treatment from the Kennedy Krieger Institute. They need funds not only for travel across the country with Alex but also for some of his hospital bills.
Amy linked me to Passport To Recovery, a fundraising benefit for the child of a friend who has brain cancer, which has been extremely expensive to fight. The event was last Friday, but their Facebook page still has a donation widget and they are still accepting support. You can read more here and donate at the widget here.
Ways To Give: Haiyan
mad_martha saw the post about Typhoon Haiyan last week and linked to Shelterbox, a UK-based organization providing emergency survival equipment for disaster survivors. You can check out the box here and donate to help here. Not gonna lie, the fact that the second ingredient in the shelter box is a bunch of childrens' art supplies labeled "hope" hit me right in the feels.
soc_puppet also had links for Typhoon Haiyan aid:
fandomaid is running buy-it-now and custom request fandom fundraisers.
Ways To Give: Organisations
Kate linked to Touchdown UK, a charity aimed at bringing American Football to children and young people in Scotland. They currently support around seventy children in five clubs, but their transport car has broken down and they need £500 to repair it or the charity will close down until repairs can be made. You can read more and find the paypal link to donate here.
stinaleigh linked to an indiegogo for Harmtown Farms, a community urban garden in Detroit that needs to outbid a local sausage factory to keep from being turned into a parking lot. They've reached their goal but of course the purchase will be decided in a bidding war, so everything helps. You can read more about the issue here.
Ways To Give: Fun!
Christina linked to a kickstarter for an indie video game company, who are determined to get their game made the way they want it. They've turned down publishers who want them to change the entire game structure and/or add more scantily clad women; now they're trying to get funding so the work they've put into it won't go by the wayside. You can read more about the game and donate here.
Anon linked to a kickstarter for a game called Slash: Romance Without Boundaries, which is being described as "Fandom: The Board Game" and which is getting a lot of attention. They're almost to their goal but only have until December 7th. You can read more and donate here!
And our Just For Fun of the week...
thecolourclear linked to Nine Billion Names, a new collection on AO3 that explores the role and concept of faith (or lack thereof) in the lives of various characters. It's an open collection, meaning anyone can add a religious-themed fic, prompt a fic, or claim a prompt for a fic.
This has been Radio Free Monday! Thank you for your time. You can always post items for my attention in comments here (or on any post) or email me at copperbadge at gmail dot com. If you're not sure how to proceed, here is a little more about what I do and how you can help (or ask for help!).
