May. 26th, 2014 06:15 amGood morning, everyone, happy Memorial Day if you're in the US, and welcome to Radio Free Monday!
ETA: NO RFM next Monday! For details see here.
Ways To Give:
kangeiko has a great post up about how fandom in specific can help with relief for the survivors of the catastrophic flooding in the Balkans last week.
rynia linked to a fundraiser for their friend Sarah, a trans woman who has just finished grad school but can't access her transcripts until she pays the university a chunk of money; she's also facing potentially steep moving costs. You can read more at rynia's dreamwidth post here or read and support the fundraiser here.
theorclair is still raising money for dental work, and is under a bit of a time crunch to raise the rest of the $3K she needs. You can read more about her predicament and how to help at her tumblr here.
ticktocktober is holding a digital yard sale to raise money for a flight to Austin, Texas, to attend RTX and meet their best in person. They have items for sale posted here on tumblr and here on dreamwidth. They're selling DVDs, Blu-rays, box sets, video games, and a red 3DS XL system.
taragreen89's sister Uma was accepted to the HARTT summer intensive, and won a partial merit scholarship but needs to raise $3675 to cover tuition/room/board. They are in the last two weeks of the fundraiser with 35% raised; they are offering perks at their indiegogo fundraiser but are asking even people who can't give to share the campaign on Facebook, which could earn them a place on Indiegogo's front page.
starlingthefool wanted to share information about Eden Alexander's terrible experience with WePay, who shut down crowdfunding for her medical bills from a near-fatal staph infection due to her position as a sex worker. She raised almost $800 before WePay--which processes funds raised in GiveForward campaigns--told her that they couldn't process her money due to her campaign's "connection with pornographic items". You can support her new fundraiser here, or read more at The Rumpus and Kitty Stryker (last link is a NSFW blog but has a good roundup of info).
derien linked to Dawn Fortune's "Invest A Fortune" fundraiser, which is raising money to send Dawn, recently graduated from Andover Newton Theological School, to Fremont California to start an internship at a Unitarian Universalist Congretation there. Dawn's mission is "bring together the sex-positive/sex-education communities and people of faith to share information they both need, based on values both communities share." You can read more and support the fundraiser here.
News To Know:
shrewreadings linked me to a great resource for cheap college textbooks.
magnetic_pole wanted to let everyone know about LGBTQ Recs, a community for reccing queer- and trans-themed media. Recs don't need to be formal or lengthy; they're just interested in fun stuff to enjoy during Pride month. You can see what people are reccing here and sign up to recc stuff here through May 31.
Just For Fun:
Elizabeth linked me to A History Of The Past, an essay about history composed of student bloopers.
frenchroast let me know that the Sad Gallbladder has now been turned into a plush toy...
And this has been Radio Free Monday! Thank you for your time. You can always post items for my attention in comments here (or on any post) or email me at copperbadge at gmail dot com. If you're not sure how to proceed, here is a little more about what I do and how you can help (or ask for help!).
