ANGRY ABOUT JAZZ MUSIC
Nov. 10th, 2016 12:38 pmI don’t often encounter people when running at 4am, but when I do they’re invariably weird.
This morning on my run I saw a nicely-dressed man about my age ahead of me on the sidewalk, waving for my attention. Thinking he was lost or perhaps had been mugged, I slowed down and took out my headphones.
“Will you listen to this motherfucker?” he asked me (in an English accent, for extra random).
I looked in the direction he was pointing. There was a closed storefront with music playing over a speaker above the door. I mean music is a little weird at 4am, but it was on Michigan near the Symphony and there are several music stores and small music schools in the area, so not that weird. I couldn’t figure out why this guy was stopping strangers on the street to get their opinion.
“Listen to the…music?” I asked.
“Can you hear it?” he demanded.
“Yeah,” I said confusedly. The music was jazzy swing, very Benny Goodman, and pretty catchy really. “What’s wrong with it?”
“Well, what do you make of it?”
“I like it,” I told him with a sunny smile, and out of instinct I popped my headphones back in and went on running before he could respond.
I still can’t figure out why he was SO MAD about swing music at 4am. He didn’t seem to be angry about the noise keeping him awake, and he didn’t seem drunk, he was just a well-dressed Englishman who was really angry that someone had chosen to play that particular song. I should have stopped to inquire deeper, but I kind of like the enigma.
