And here it is -- my personal fanfictional year in review.

Let the record also show that this year I:

Lost my personal archive
Restored it using LiveJournal's superior archival structure
Wrote a thesis and completed my Master of Arts degree
Completed, in less than six months, a 200,000 word fanfic
founded a community
and showed up twice in Fandom_Wank.

GO ME!

A year-in-review meme. I only used each fic once, because otherwise Cartographer's Craft would go down under like, half of them. :D

Favorite this year:
Reclamation. I couldn't tell you why. I suspect it's because I feel like JKR doesn't give Tom even a fighting chance -- he's a Bad Seed, and I was really satisfied to write him as someone who overcame his conditioning. Tom Gaunt is not a nice man and he's not really any better than Lord Voldemort, inside, but I genuinely like him.

Best this year:
Cartographer's Craft, without a doubt. It is by far the most intricate, complex, character-rich, and seamless chaptered fic I have ever written. Based purely on quality of work it far surpasses Stealing Harry and Laocoon's Children.

Most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
The Lost Chord. I should point out I'm not at all surprised by this, because the Wimsey fandom is pretty small. And there's no sex, which has a big appeal for Fandom in general. Lost Chord is just a small, thoughtful piece. But I love it.

Most fun to write:
Captain My Own Soul. Draco is really fun when I'm in the mood to write him, and I loved writing Regulus in this. It was a joy and a delight, as Reg himself would say.

Sexiest:
I almost put this one down for Most Fun, but The Laws of Heaven and Earth Remix of A Lifetime Of Calamities Followed by Dangerous Illness by [livejournal.com profile] blythely was the sexiest this year, I think. Despite involving infectious disease. I can't really plug the Remix enough -- [livejournal.com profile] musesfool runs it and I hope devoutly that she'll do it again this year because it was so much fun.

"Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you":
Jack's Discovery which is just a flopsy, actually. And yet it is still more wrong than Slughorn trying to have sex with Tom Riddle. Funny how that works....XD

Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters:
In Every Word is what really began to interest me in an exploration of what JKR left out of Tom Riddle's character, and it spurred a lot of fascinating discussion about Slughorn as well. I almost listed Act of Redemption for this one (you can find it below) but AoR really altered my perception of religion more than my perception of Az and Crowley.

Hardest to do:
Theory and Practice, which is sort of a cop-out because it was never actually written, it's just an outline. It also drew criticism from some pro-Snape quarters. But essentially I was cramming a novel-length fic into an afternoon, and writing in a way that I rarely ever do -- my plots normally evolve as I go, so fixing up a full one from scratch was tough. Commentary post-hack: Not sure if this vanished or what; at any rate the link is dead.

Biggest disappointment:
Ownership. It feels so incomplete. It doesn't get across what I wanted it to, and now I'm not sure I even remember what that was. A good theory/plotline, wasted.

Biggest surprise:
Identifying Marks. I don't like unhappy endings and I didn't want this to be the first fic I wrote after HBP, but...well, that didn't seem to matter to this particular story.

Most telling:
I was really torn over this one between Professor and Cheap Philosophy. They both dwell on the same theme, the desperation which poverty forces us into. They're completely opposite treatments of it, but they use the same pivotal character: in Professor, Remus makes light of his poverty and takes joy in living by his wits, while in Cheap Philosophy money isn't what pleases him so much as the things he can provide for other people with it. Both, in some way, touch my own experiences deeply.

Unusual Fanfiction:

Ages of Ink Remix written by [livejournal.com profile] mousapelli. Though I didn't write this, it is related to Ages of Ink, so I wanted to make sure it was mentioned. I cannot say how much I love this interpretation of my fic, and Mousapelli was the perfect one to do it.

The Laws of Heaven and Earth Remix based on A Lifetime Of Calamities Followed by Dangerous Illness by [livejournal.com profile] blythely. Both rated R. Harry/Draco, mine with a hint of Harry/Remus.

The Lily Evans Remix based on Generous by [livejournal.com profile] fleshdress. Both rated PG-13, Marauders-Era, multiple ships, focus on R/S and J/L.
